Just curious about this:
Previously, there was a trend among newlyweds to get a 3-room HDB as most of us did not want to be tied down by mortgage repayments.
Maybe after a year or two when children come into the picture, upgrading is necessary.
Is this trend still on-going now? Or is it just better to just go for the largest where one's budget allows?
Utilities rebates are inversely proportional to the size of the flat. Whereas SC&C charges are directly proportional to the size of the flat.
Opinions please. -

Other than that, if you find a place that you really like and it's within your budget, then go for it. -
I don't think most couples can pay off the mortgage for a 3 room flat in 2 years or even 5 years and if they intend to upgrade when children come into the picture, they might as well get a bigger flat. I don't think they will save much on utilities rebates and SC&C charges when they cost in the moving cost, renovations, time invested (opportunity costs) etc when you shift into a new flat.Originally posted by Croaking_Toad:Just curious about this:

The trend I see from my friends is that they get a 4 room or 5 room flat. One room is converted into a study and an empty spare room for future use when they have kids. This is what I did as well. Anyway in my opinion a 3 room flat is way too small Not enough space for me -
