Is Union a dirty word in SG? how strong are the nurses union?Originally posted by Rhonda:Y'know, a freshly-graduated nurse I know who just started working this July was so exasperated once she complained about how difficult a particular 'A' class patient was.
I pointed out to her that all thanks to our govt, they just want to attract foreign patients to our hospital BUT, they did not think about increasing the manpower and other resources to meet the naturally higher demands of these foreign patients and their families.![]()
Naturally, think of what this will do to staff morale in the long run.![]()
One of my colleagues exclaimed recently, "The nurses' union is the weakest union of all!"Originally posted by Kan_i:Is Union a dirty word in SG? how strong are the nurses union?
Anything that will fight more more pay and less working hours for employees is illegal in Singapore.Originally posted by Kan_i:Is Union a dirty word in SG?
Yeah!Originally posted by av98m:Haiz...same old crap I see. Employers, including our fucking government, just do not seem to be able to get it throught their thick skulls that you need people to do the work and you cannot increase workload while cutting manpower at the same time. Yet this is exactly what is happening! Everywhere!![]()

The biggest "union" here runs supermarkets, minimarts, insurance, funeral services as well as taxi services.
Oooh free gift.... where do i signOriginally posted by Rhonda:One of my colleagues exclaimed recently, "The nurses' union is the weakest union of all!"
Incidentally, when they recently changed their mode of payment, ie. union members now have to apply for GIRO deductions instead of having the union fees deducted from their salary once a year, quite a number of my colleagues decided to end their membership.Their reason - the Union does nothing for us except give us free gifts once a year!
There's the union for you!![]()
I guess over here, unions are mainly just 'for show'.Originally posted by Kan_i:Oooh free gift.... where do i sign
yes it seems that some unions are run by people that are willing to compromise on issues or easily intimdated by Govt or Employers. Some seem more concern about their own jobs than the peopl they represent.
Well.......you cannot totally blame them. They might end up accused of inciting civil unrest and get their assess sued, made bankrupt, and lose their citizenship! Justice does not wear a blindfold in Singapore.Originally posted by Kan_i:Oooh free gift.... where do i sign

Errr...no. Can download it I guess?Originally posted by Rhonda:Yo, av98m... are you on MSN Messenger?
Wah! They sound interesting, thanks!Originally posted by av98m:Rhonda, I've got a couple of books you might like.
"How To Be Idle" by Tom Hodgkinson.
Its a humourous look at the evolution of work culture over the ages, and looks at how things used to be like.
"Willing Slaves" by Madeline Bunting looks at the current work culture in the UK and how it is destroying lives and relationships. Very applicable to Singapore too.
Can pass them to you if you're looking for reading material.
Ah well, you don't exactly need it if you don't already have it.Originally posted by av98m:Errr...no. Can download it I guess?

It took me totally by surprise and very suddenly too! I experienced a mild discomfort at the back of my throat during the afternoon but was generally ok. Came back from dinner with my parents and as the night wore on, started to feel worse and worse until I ran a fever! Everything happened so fast!
If you're falling ill, go see a good doc, quick! Get well before CNY!
