Well... I have to say that it has alot to do with the child's personality and temperament. Corporal punishment may work for some kids but let me cite from my own experience and circumstance. I am very lucky to have been blessed with even tempered kids. All it takes is talking to them and at the absolute most, raising our voices at them. Mind you, when I was a kid, I knew Mr Rotan very well. I cannot imagine taking the rotan to my kids. I thought that below a certain age they would be unable to reason nor use logic thus talking isn't much use...
But yeah some kids are easier to handle than others.

I'm naturally obstinate and strong-headed, and even at a young age, already exhibited those alarming traits!
Till today, I can remember the times when my dad caned me and it was unfair! He'd come home from work all stressed up and frustrated and take it out on me and my bro. Being the eldest, I bore the brunt of his attacks. Oddly enough, my brother has a sweeter temperament and he cannot recall any such incidents!!
Me, I can remember them crystal-clear! 
There were times when I was so angry that I got caned for things I thought were absolutely unfair that I would bite down hard and clench my little fists and despite tears streaming down my face, I refused to utter a single cry, even as dad caned harder and harder. Mom said she got very very scared and worried whenever I did that!
Not that I don't wish to forgive and forget... I wish I had a brain like a sieve for these kinds of things, but unfortunately, I'm an extremely sensitive person and such things just burn into my memory and it's now in my RAM liao! -

But if I remember correctly, before they're 3 or 4 years of age, it's NO USE reasoning to them because their critical faculties haven't exactly been developed fully yet. Before that, they HAVE to understand cause and effect, ie. I do this, I kena something bad and not nice one! In other words, they have to fear the authority figures, their parents, somewhat because they will constantly be testing your limits to see what they can get away with. This is the time to instil a healthy respect for authority and to establish certain boundaries.
But of course, bleedin' hearts would say otherwise, and go on to produce children who cry foul at every li'l thing and can take the hard knocks of life as well as a piece of tofu can resist the devastating effects of the cleaver.
I think you can't exactly choose to produce an even-tempered baby cause it's kinda wired into the genes liao! If you and your husband were both even-tempered babies, the chances of you having one is then, much higher!

I'm the one who is always getting him into trouble and teaching him and my cousin naughty things. Eg. Flooding the toliet, Water bombs, Saboing someone by adding salt in the water as well as water bomb on top of the door and other tricks
Growing up with 2 guys (my brother and my cousin...mum was helping to look after cousin) we had our share of fights and I was the big bully Was the stubborn one too but funny thing was I was a shy baby. -
Hmm....then even more reason for me not to have kids..if its wired into the genes my kid might have a violent temper and grow up to be a mass murderer/serial killer. Unless the mother is all sweetness and apple pie.

I think my time, they had "Hao3 Gong1 Ming2" and "Dao4 De2 Jiao4 Yu4" classes and one of the lessons taught to us in Primary School was something like "It's polite to talk softly and not loudly because you will be disturbing those around you."
How many of you can remember those lessons? Cute li'l courtesy campaign booklets were also given out every year to us Primary School kids!
I used to collect them ... until mom quietly and sneakily discarded them! (She still insists she didn't! )
How many of you here remember those classes?
I know I'm old... cause a lot of what ah ma and lao3 shi1 taught to me are now considered obsolete liao!
