Since employers love to employ contract or part time workers these days, why are they not happy when a pregnant staff goes for maternity leave? They have these part time workers for the projects during the gap

Actually I am not that keen on maternity leave too. Its just that the concept...bothers me somehow. I am okae with them taking unpaid leave and then taking a baby bonus somewhere for compensation.
Or mabbe knowing that my colleague would be taking paid maternity leave for having a kid just irks me.
