Noisy neighbor jailed for causing insomnia, headachesNARA -- A woman who harassed her neighbor by repeatedly playing loud music for over two years was sentenced to one year in prison on Friday.
Miyoko Kawahara, 59, from Heguri, Nara Prefecture, was accused of deliberately playing loud music on her CD player from November 2002 until April 2005, when she was arrested. The neighbor suffered insomnia, headaches, dizziness and high blood pressure as a result.
"She was stubborn and insidious," said Tetsuya Okuda, the presiding judge over the case at the Nara District Court. "She didn't show any regret."
Kawahara denied any causal relationship between the music from her CD player and the victim's illness. But Judge Okuda said that the victim's symptoms were clearly related to mental stress caused by the noise.
Earlier, the Osaka High Court, upholding a lower court's decision, ordered Kawahara to pay 2 million yen in damages to the victim. Kawahara has appealed the high court ruling.
Kawahara first got into trouble in 1990, after arguing over a lighting stand set up in the garden of her 65-year-old neighbor.
