Gee, I think i'll work hard at talking him into buying a normal digital camera -

actually, i'd recommend a D2x with the works... what does he want to take? insect porn like av or long range shots?
the lens has to be VERY fast for the D2x..
and he'll need a flash booster too... to power the flash..
all in all, about.. say.. $12,000 -

okay.. so no dSLRs then.. or just the workhorse, D70 or D200... both are pretty good
all kinds of lenses and booster, D200 will set you back.. maybe $6k to $7k
D70 is cheaper.. it's not as fast so no need for boosters.. maybe $4k
the other thing would be to go for the nikon 8800 or the sony top-of-the-range one.. they're good too
