Up with smiles, down with odour for Singapore cabbiesSINGAPORE (AFP) - Singapore cabbies have been told to show some warm smiles when they ferry delegates to the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings in September, reports said.
An estimated 8,500 taxi drivers were given a 66-page handbook by the Workforce Development Agency on what they should and should not do during the meetings, the Today newspaper said.
On the no-nos list are body odour, fidgeting while driving and having too many accessories, it said.Cabbies are however encouraged to smile and act as tourism ambassadors for Singapore, giving pointers to delegates on the city-state's attractions.
In short, cabbies must "look good and feel good with positive self-talk," the handbook said.
The IMF and World Bank meetings will be the biggest international gathering ever to come to Singapore. About 16,000 delegates from 180 countries are expected to attend.
Last month Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong launched the "Four Million Smiles" project as he urged all citizens and foreigners living in Singapore to exercise maximum hospitality.
