well, the chinese smashed countless such "cults" everyday, I think the only reason falungong got such an outcry is because they managed to go international before the authorities cracked down on them ....
go surf the chinese forums and news sometimes, it's comical really ...
like the followers of two charismatic churches (from the US) fighting in the streets in a village (actually reported in the NYT) ... or this set of nutters who claimed descent from the ming dynasty emperors and actually set up a "court" with "concubines" and "ministers" before they arrested him .....
it's just like some of those nutters from India ... who live in multi-million dollar mansions and molests little children and have followers worshipping them as Gods (you know who now)....

2.) smooth talking clergy: duh !
3.) create barriers to conversion and to widen pool, enshrine those in as tenets of your religion: conversion through marriage, taboo against switching to another religion, "setting" offspring's religion at birth to prevent choice
4.) money is power: squeeze your flock
and a whole lot of other stuff ... now if you look at successful religions throughout history ... you'll notice certain trends ...
