In other news....
We've sent an email to the Rotary Club. We're explaining that our current aluminium wheelchair prototype will not work if we don't send it for heat treatment, and our budget doesn't allow it. So we're asking them whether a proof-of-concept prototype can be built instead of a fully-operating prototype.
If they say no, then we'll be forced to turn to mild steel. The plus side of mild steel is that its mechanical properties don't change with welding, and we can (somewhat) offset the increased density with a reduction in tube thickness.
The bad thing is that we'll have to import the steel tubes from the US - which will of course take time and money.
Right now I'm doing recalculations to make sure that the parts that I'm designing do not fail under several modes of mechanical failure (buckling, shear, combined tension/bending).
It's causing me one big uber headache.

dude... mild steel requires a certain thickness to be strong enough.. you're still hampered by weight... which means you have to shave the tubes down to a certain thickness..

They told us that mild steel as thin as 1mm can handle the load. They claim to have built structures with members capable of sustaining more severe loading that what we're having.
And from my calculations so far, I can see that it can bear the load so long as the outer diameter for my part is 38.1mm. That's an increase from the original diameter of 31.75mm, but I don't see any other way of getting around it. -

in the 30s, there was a proliferation of ragweed which the farmers tried to control with a certain herbicide...
well, that herbicide ignited when hit with stuff or in radiant heat... and more, if you washed it with the soap they had at that time, the pants became even more volatile...

they proved that used cooking oil will run a diesel engine pretty well! only 10% less mileage than normal diesel!
all you have to do is to get that gunk the fast food restaurants throw out, filter it and put it in your tank.. a diesel engine will run! -
