A majority of Singaporeans agreed with Parliamentary Secretary Maliki Osman’s remark that some people are 'homeless by choice' – specifically, the same kind of choice that puts most of our MPs in Parliament.
Mr. MalikiÂ’s remark came after Marine Parade GRC MP Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim brought up the issue of the homeless in Singapore and asked what the Housing Development Board (HDB) is doing to help.
Mr. Maliki said there were many housing options available, including subsidised rental flats, open-market rental flats, or living with relatives, and so homelessness in Singapore had to be an act of volition. In simpur Engrish, “get out of my elite, uncaring flat”.
“But I think Maliki is absolutely right,” said grassroots volunteer and investment banker Mr. Hobson Choo. “There’s always a choice in Singapore. We chose our MPs, after all. Every single one of them, even in the super GRCs, and even when there’s a walkover in our constituencies. It’s also the kind of choice we have about who gets to run our state enterprises. It may not be the kind of choice that other countries have, but you know, Singapore is a special case.”
Some members of the homeless community agreed too. Said Mdm Takada binte Rumah, “Yah betul, I definitely chose to stay here under this overpass along the PIE. My husband died, my kids are still young, no one wants to give me a job, I can’t ask my relatives for help because they are all also facing money problems because they’re not members of the, apa tu? ‘Elite’. So I looked at all my options, which included suicide and prostitution, and CHOSE to live along the expressway. OK lah, so maybe here cannot get cable TV, but here also got entertainment options. Late at night, here is like watching Formula One. For free, some more.”
But help may be on the way for Mdm Takada and others like her. The Tissue Paper Retailers Association says it has job openings available immediately in branches nationwide.
In other news, the Gahmen is asking for Singaporeans to come forward and create the next YouTube or Skype, according to a report by Unoriginality Magazine.

On my way home from giving tuition just now, I decided to visit Sim Lim Square for a while. Since I'm planning to get a new MP3 player and digicam in the new future, I thought I might want to get an idea of what to expect to pay.
The camera I have my eye on ( Nikon Coolpix s8 ) costs anywhere between $405 and $485 there. In all cases they come with a one-year warranty and a 1GB SD card (I made sure to ask).
It's a bargain compared to the listed price of $499 at Best Denki, but I know that at least some of the Sim Lim shopkeepers are out to pull a fast one on me, and I can't decide whom I should trust.
Likewise, an iPod Nano (2nd gen) 2GB there costs between $215 and $245 (listed price of $248 at Courts).
Ah... the risks of shopping at Sim Lim. -
you should try the fujifilm f31, superb and around the same price range. I dun like the new nikon compacts.

Hmm... I was thinking of an ultra-compact camera since I always lug my digicam around whenever I'm out.
Which was why I was considering the Nikon Coolpix series or the Sony T10... but the latter costs considerably more with roughly the same specs.
Anyway, why don't you like the new Nikon ultra-compact series, av? -
I dunno, I've tried a few in the shop but never quite liked them. I prefer their earlier series of compacts. Why not look at the canon compacts as well? In any case, I'm not in a rush for a new digicam.... my funds only allow for either a digicam OR a new MP3 player, and the latter is higher up on my priority list right now.

My phone is a Sony Ericsson z520i. Pretty decent phone for normal use, though the battery life is pretty short. I need to charge it up every three days.
I got it for $0 when I switched to the M1 Student Plan. -

true... it'll be released in the US in the middle of the year however, the US is using the PCS system at 1900
they don't need sim-cards
we are stuck with the GSM 1800 or 900 system..
