140/90 is still in the acceptable range lehOriginally posted by fudgester:*me mysteriously appears in a puff of smoke*
Just got back from the polyclinic.
The doc gave me some codeine sulphate pills for my migraines.
He took my blood pressure. It was elevated: 140/90.
He was also so stunned that he kept repeating the procedure again and again with the old-fashioned sphygmomanometer and stethoscope (Bear would know what I'm talking about). In the end, he told me to come again next week for a follow-up.![]()

nay the normal systolic is between 120 to 140 and diastolic is 80 to 90 unless they just changed the definitions around.Originally posted by fudgester:The maximum healthy blood pressure is 130/80.
That's according to the posters posted all over the polyclinic.
And also, from:Originally posted by hisoka:140/90 is still in the acceptable range leh
As you can see, I just barely overshoot both the systolic and diastolic requirements to be considered as prehypertensive.
Individuals with a systolic BP of 120 to 139 mm Hg or a diastolic BP of 80 to 89 mm Hg should be considered as prehypertensive and require health-promoting lifestyle modifications to prevent CVD (cardiovascular disease).
what's systolic and diastolic? as in, what do they measure?Originally posted by hisoka:nay the normal systolic is between 120 to 140 and diastolic is 80 to 90 unless they just changed the definitions around.
pre indicates normal anyway each individual is different.Originally posted by fudgester:As you can see, I just barely overshoot both the systolic and diastolic requirements to be considered as prehypertensive.
And no, I was in a pretty relaxed state when the doc took my BP.
You sure?Originally posted by hisoka:nay the normal systolic is between 120 to 140 and diastolic is 80 to 90 unless they just changed the definitions around.

Systolic: maximum blood pressure when the heart is in a compressed stage.Originally posted by MooKu:what's systolic and diastolic? as in, what do they measure?

I've been trained as a medic spec, and the systolic BPs of all the report sick personnel I've performed triage on have hardly ever breached 130.
And the medical literature I've been reading says that normal systolic is 130 and diastolic is 80, tops. If anything, some sources cite even lower figures.
Even the good doctor himself was sufficiently stunned at my BP reading to retake it several times.
The source I just gave should clarify things further.
systolic is when the heart is contracted and diastolic means when the pressure when the heart is relaxedOriginally posted by MooKu:what's systolic and diastolic? as in, what do they measure?
