She's one of those few who know of the traumatic thing that happened when I first arrived. She's very caring and sympathetic, like you!

More young here hit by Parkinson's

DOCTORS are seeing more young people diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, a degenerative disease usually associated with ageing.

In fact, of the 5,000 to 7,000 cases diagnosed in Singapore, 15 to 20 per cent are patients below the age of 40, said senior consultant neurologist Dr Tan Eng King at a press conference yesterday on World Parkinson's Disease Day.

He told Today he has seen a 10-to-20-per-cent jump in the number of new diagnoses in that age group over the last two years at the Singapore General Hospital.

Why this is happening is unclear, but Dr Tan said this makes early diagnosis and treatment even more important.
.
"A young student might think it is just their nature to be slow in their movement, or someone who has tremors may think it is because of anxiety," he said.
.
Parkinson's is a brain disorder that manifests itself in uncontrollable shaking, stiffness in the limbs and slowness of movement. There is currently no cure but the symptoms can be managed through medication and surgery.

Another consultant neurologist at Tan Tock Seng Hospital also said he was "beginning to see more cases of younger patients".

However, Dr Au Wing Lok noted that this could be because "more of them are aware (of the condition) and are coming forward".

A local study in 2004 found that the disease affects three out of every 1,000 Singaporeans aged 50 and above. While there has not been a similar study done among younger Singaporeans, Dr Louis Tan from the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) suggested that research could focus instead on the genetic causes of the disease — as it has been found that a greater proportion of younger people with Parkinson's carry gene mutations.

Last year, Singapore and Taiwan researchers identified a mutated gene that doubles the chance of developing the disease and, interestingly, is found in people of Chinese descent.

More genetic information will "allow doctors to confirm the diagnosis in some patients earlier" and to counsel patients on the risks of their children having the disease, said Dr Tan Eng King.

Meanwhile, a three-day international symposium on the disease will be held here in October. It will include workshops on rehabilitation therapy and nursing.

I think at the beginning, when we're just starting out, we may not be able to afford better-quality stuff, but once we're more established in life, that might be the preferred way to go cause in the long run, it's more economical. -

I think at the beginning, when we're just starting out, we may not be able to afford better-quality stuff, but once we're more established in life, that might be the preferred way to go cause in the long run, it's more economical.
edit: anyway i buy t-shirts or polo T from shops like gordanio for 10 plus and they last me for like 1 or 2 years. sounds good enough for me -

Anyways, I'm probably demented, not parkinson's. I think I probably need to pick up some addiction, like coffee / chocolates / whatever! Probably just need some distraction and a little bit of evil in my too-sterile and boring life here!

Anyway, just take good care of yourself. I know it can be "lonely" living by yourself sometimes especially in a foreign country where you don't have many friends to turn to. -

It can be. It's a different type of loneliness from what I experienced when I was living alone in SG. Thought all those years of living alone would have prepared me but it's different cause my friends were just a phone call away, and mom was just the next block away during my last few years in SG.Originally posted by honeymouse:

That's why I tranquilize myself with Korean TV Dramas... they are my current poison of choice! Hong Kong DVD's are too expensive here, and the Jap series don't come with English subtitles here, so what to do? Recently, I've given up on the English translations in the Korean dramas so I've resorted to reading the Chinese subtitles instead! -

Anyway , I think when you have so many things to look after, some things will slip. So go easy on yourself

The quality of the top was good in the first place. Strong, thick material, not easy to get unravelled. And the print was in good ink too. It never faded!Originally posted by hisoka:

Use laundry nets when washing items of your laundry that might get washed out-of-shape. -

That top survived almost 20 years liao! Colours still very xian yan!
A skirt I have, which is one of my favourites, also survived almost 15 years! It's a nice soft, cotton skirt, kinda patchwork style with black and black-background, pink roses mix. The elastic waist band has become looser over the years, but otherwise, it's still good-to-go!
Only problem is, they don't look up-to-the-minute fashionable. -

Yep, totally understand the type of loneliness you're talking about. You have only been here for a year.... Sometimes, when I feel out-of-breath, I sit down, pray and then tell myself, "For goodness' sakes! You've only been here for one year!!" I kinda want to do too much too soon!

Can you play Australian DVD in Singapore? Is Singapore TV NTSC or PAL? Australia is PAL.
