A systolic BP of 140 isn't all too high, if it weren't for the fact that I'm (a) 24 this year, (b) a non-smoker, (c) a non-drinker, (d) a regular exerciser, (e) no known family history of hypertension.
A series of blood pressure readings should be done on your at various times of the day and on different days to see what your readings are like and to give a rough indiation of whether the high BP is a one-off occurence or a chronic situation that ought to be checked out thoroughly.
Basically, in Singapore's public health system, anyone under 35 who is hypertensive has to go through a gamut of tests to determine the cause. I had the tests done on me and everything was alright and the Prof came to the conclusion that it was hereditary.
You can be healthy and exercising regularly but from the age of 19 onwards, our body's degeneration starts and plaque in the blood vessels start forming as early as 20 years of age. -

Cranial (Brain) blood vessels are very fine and very sensitive to every little dilation and constriction. Changes in your blood pressure either ways will cause changes to your blood vessels as they change their sizes to adapt to the extra / lessened pressure of the blood flowing through it, ie. high blood pressure, vessels dilate; low blood pressure, vessels constrict. -

.. but I'm not sure whether I can really afford to fork out all that dough for all those tests. Being a cash-strapped undergrad, I don't have a lot of money to my name.
But then again, I guess I don't really have a choice. Last thing I want is to suffer from long-term complications out of not doing anything about it. -

In the States, when autopsies were done on young road traffic accident victims and/or patients who died from various diseases, they found plaque already starting to build up in the blood vessels of those in their early 20's. So the plaque that causes so much trouble to middle-aged and the elderly folks actually start to appear as early as when they were in their 20's!
In the US, a few prominent cardiologists actually take Lipitor, a medicine for lowering cholesterol levels in the blood, even though their cholesterol levels are lower. This is simply a preventive measure which does good, and there's apparently no adverse effects from doing so. -
I'm not talking about private GP's. Approach the Polyclinics - they are highly subsidised, esp for students. Besides, all the follow-up tests and consultations that you need won't burn a hole in your pocket. And the meds that are dispensed will be subsidised too.Originally posted by fudgester:Sigh... Go to the Polyclinic, if need be, the GP will refer you to the Specialists and get you to take the ECG and blood tests that are necessary.
Prolonged, uncontrolled hypertension will damage your blood vessels in the long run, and if left ignored for a really long time, can result in irreversible kidney damage and even develop aneurysms in the brain!
Now, between dealing with early hypertension and with the rest, the choice ought to be very very clear! -

Actually, one year ago I attended a free health screening that Alexandra Hospital was conducting for the undergrads in NUS. The nurse took my BP with one of those expensive new automated sphygmomanometers - the reading was 134/110.
The nurse was stunned and took a second reading - this time it was a better 110/70. So we both reasoned that the first reading was just a device malfunction or something.
Now, thinking about it.... I can't help but wonder if the first reading was the real one. For my most recent reading of 140/90, the doc was sufficiently stunned to keep inflating and deflating the cuff many times to make sure that he really saw what he was seeing. -
