Yesterday, I called up the IRAS folks to explain to them that I'm no longer living and working in Singapore and that I want to settle my final payment for the last fiscal year that I'm taxable here.Originally posted by av98m:They wanted to fine me $150.
They got a nasty email and phonecall from me.
They 'waived' the fine.

There! Applied Psychology!
If you apply Economics to this issue, you can say man cannot get goods, therefore man makes-do with closest substitute!

better make sure, ur not earning any rental income, dividends etc. its still taxable as long as its local even though you're based overseas. thats how iras catch unsuspecting people who aren't familiar with the local system.Originally posted by Rhonda:Yesterday, I called up the IRAS folks to explain to them that I'm no longer living and working in Singapore and that I want to settle my final payment for the last fiscal year that I'm taxable here.
A young, obviously inexperienced guy answered the call. I asked a few questions including this :
"Will future penalty rates be incurred for not filing? I wish to inform IRAS that I no longer live and work in Singapore."
"Your penalty rate has been waived."
"I know. It has been waived for this current outstanding payment because I wasn't in town. I'm saying, I wish to inform the IRAS that I will not be filing for any income taxes from now on because I no longer work here and I don't wish to be fined for non-compliance."
"But your penalty rate has been waived!"![]()
I finally asked to speak to someone else because that was like the 4th question I asked and had to repeat and rephrase and speak slower and he still couldn't understand me.
I think the conversation was not in some script that was in his instruction booklet or something and he felt lost.
Luckily his supervisor answered all my questions succintly, didn't misinterpret any question, and the whole conversation ended very quickly.![]()
