Good to have you around, you make me feel so young! no leh, just watch this..Originally posted by Rhonda:I think they added those bits for comic relief.
Just like in Tamil dramas, they add the chase around the tree, woman falls into river and part of saree goes floating down the stream... stuff like that. For added effect, for comic relief.
Hell, I sure hope nobody watches Phua Chu Kang and think that us Singaporeans are anything like the characters in there!![]()

I don't think a typical foreigner watching the local dramas on TCS 5 would be able to pick out anything about a repressed society.Originally posted by Fatum:oh no, I'm talking about serious dramas Rhonda, but even from comedies you can sense the priorities and mentality of that society ....
as for Singaporean dramas ... you can easily tell that it's a repressed society too ... trying to find it's voice .... that's why there's not quite a pattern yet ...![]()

There is a lot more to bear about it.
Tare, just know that, they are most likely trying to push you to end this fiasco to get it off their minds.
You can be nice and do it at their bidding. Or you can do it at your own time, own target and at your own cost.
well ... I think dramas and movies are a good place to start getting a "sense" of a people, since it's a dramatization, subtleties get amplified ... but you got to pick up on them of course ...Originally posted by Rhonda:I don't think a typical foreigner watching the local dramas on TCS 5 would be able to pick out anything about a repressed society.
Whilst some directors DO use dramas and movies as a medium to subtly criticise society, I think most just want to make sure they produce something that will appeal to the audience back home.
I never think that real Koreans are anywhere close to those drama depictions!I've heard of how rude they can be, jumping queues and pushing you, but if you watch the dramas and derive your perspective from there, you'd think they are a bunch of very polite peeps, which is not the case if you're a stranger. In fact, until you know them and establish some sort of social order amongst you and them, they may not even bother being polite.
Don't ask me about TCS 8, I don't go there!![]()
Hey, dont worry. I wasnt implying anything from your post.Originally posted by Rhonda:Hey, just trying to console in my own limited way. I wouldn't know a thing because I haven't even been married.

which is why I love watching japanese movies .... I find the japanese people creepy and fascinating at the same time ... they are perpetual children .... and yet so very deep at the same time ...
as for Singaporean dramas, trust me ... with the exception of cringing efforts like the ER man and masters of the sea, you can pick up a lot about singapore .... even from Phua Chu Kang ....
what I think a foreigner can infer from the likes of masters of the sea ? ... that Singaporeans have a confused accents ...![]()
