the place where I sleep doesn't feel like home to me ....
i've been trying hard to convince my parents to buy a property in vancouver and just move over here for good .... maybe then we'll find a new place to call home ....
but in the mean time, home shall be that little terrace house in cashew road, on that cramped little city state the rest of the world calls the gateway to the east ...

But it was filled with all sorts of disconnected dreams...
.....and among them, I sort of remember having a nightmare about being strangled by some evil spirit.

I came back and felt like a helpless tourist! Took the bus only thrice, mostly took taxis or got driven around, and wah!!

Thing is, my family is here, my friends are here, but time and tide waits for no man and they are all leading busy lives and nobody misses me.
Sooner or later, I'll find that I would have made new friends there whilst most of the ones here would not even bother about me anymore. That's the sad truth. Nothing stops for us. With or without us, things move on, people move on...
It's really embarrassing... I have a problem with Singapore coins now. Everytime I use the coins, I flip them here and there to see the denomination. Think I'm too used to the size of the different Aussie coins now. A lot of times, the salesgirls / cashiers would ask if I were a foreigner.

I had to kiss a few babies I've never seen before .....
home felt so strange and yet familiar at the same time ... the accent took a bit getting used to .... the mandarin too, didn't flowed off the tongue smoothly at first ......
but I got claustrophobic during my first rush hour MRT ride .... I remember wondering ... did I use to do that regularly before ? .... I got awfully sentimental and took some time to explore the heartlands too ... visiting my old school ... poly ... but a secondary school meet up didn't materialize ... I made the rounds of calls ... but most people are too busy with work to meet up then .... boyfriends, girlfriends, overtime, etc etc .... but at least the few constancies of home were there; family; certain friends ...
The saddest thing about home I guess, is the realization that Singapore is no place to retire ... if you're young and dynamic, Singapore is a fine place, but it's too materialistic, too mercenary, too fast, to Darwinian ... that is why I'm trying to convince my parents to pack up and enjoy their golden years here .... they've worked hard all their lives, ... but with health care and prices being what they are, they won't have a retirement, nor can they afford to fall sick ... they'll truly enjoy life here, and deserves it .... -

Fatum, when I read your post, I wanted to cry. I can identify with so many of the emotions you described.
The saddest thing is that a lot of friends you might have been close to once upon a time won't even have time for you, or it's a huge mobilisation exercise of sorts just to set up a meeting.
I look at the huge, throbbing monster of a crowd in Orchard Rd at all times of the day and I ask myself, "Did I use to be part of them? Facing this massive sea of people day in and day out?" I guess I prefer to be a solitary mermaid perched on my own cliff singing sad songs about my missing sailor lovers.
OK, anyways, back to reality...
The shopping's good, the food's good, and the friends or what's left of the friends, definitely make the entire trip memorable.
All said, I don't think I can live here anymore. I have grown to love the wide open spaces in Australia. I love the diversity as well, and I definitely love my cozy li'l pad.
I cannot imagine myself moving back to work here and live here anymore. It's much too stressful, way too crowded, darn too hot, and for all that effort, I'll be paid crap.
So now, before I settle down for sure, I feel like some amoeba, suspended in my little fluid world.
