  Turns out one of the ICs on my motherboard got fried. and my old ram and graphics cards not compatible with newer motherboards.
  
  But the motherboard is my fault. the IC that got fried had a small fan attached to it. I removed it and all the other fans when I disassembled the PC for cleaning last year. I forgot to put back that one fan. Hence the IC's premature death at 2.5 years usage.
  
  so lan lan spent $1,000 upgrading my PC, the only original parts left are my casing, power supply and drives

  Well, at least you managed to identify the faulty part.
  
  Is the fried IC socketed or hard-soldered to the mobo? Can it be replaced?

  AV, the consolation is that now the pc parts are cheaper...but whenever one needs to change MB, then that's it! - be prepared to change several other (costly) parts.

  yar man, once motherboard gone usually must change everything.

  I doubled my RAM and added a new 500gig HDD because my current one is only 200gig and its actually reused from an old PC

  I too chose to have a smaller HDD - the new pc has 80GB which is way way more than enough.
  
  I wonder how many days it takes to defragment 500GB of HDD?

  normally external hdd meant for storage purposes only, people dun bother defragging.
  
  its the main C drive that they usually defrag.
