Yup. That's the big news locally today. Interstate 35W is the major arterial roadway feeding into downtown Minneapolis from the northern suburbs, and the bridge collapse is going to seriously screw up the traffic flow there for some time yet, even with all the reroutings to alternate bridges which are out of the way and aren't designed to cope with the heavy traffic.Originally posted by sbst275:Wa... I've driven over that bridge on numerous occasions. It seems (seemed?) like a pretty substantial structure, so it'll be interesting to find out what caused the collapse. -

The thing about truss structures is that while some of the parts are in tension, the others are in compression. It can be pretty tedious to calculate the nature and magnitude of the stresses in each individual component... though it was a pretty interesting challenge when I did so back in my first year.
I suppose the jury's still out on the causes of the collapse.... it could range from stress overload failure to resonance (the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse comes to mind).
Oh yeah... trivia time... Anderson Bridge in front of the Fullerton Hotel has a truss structure.

Don't think it was resonance that brought the bridge down as, according to the news reports, the peak hour traffic on the bridge was virtually at a standstill.
There was major resurfacing work happening on the southbound lanes of the bridge, which might have been a factor in the collapse. -

Yeah, I fail to see how resurfacing a roaddeck on a bridge could bring it down. The talking heads in the media are all falling over themselves trying to come up with plausible theories for the collapse. The death toll thus far has been remarkably low: four at last count. The fact that most of the vehicles on the bridge were stationary at the time of the collapse, might have contributed to that. -
In other news, I can't help but think about the suspected haemangioma on the inner side of my lower lip. More specifically, I've noticed that some relatively major medical issue seems to crop in the final year of my studies in any institute.
While I was taking my O Levels eight years ago, I was battling urinary stress incontinence.
While I was taking my A Levels six years ago, I was battling tinnitus.
And now, just prior to my final year in NUS, I'm having a (suspected) cavernous haemangioma in my mouth. It's almost certainly benign, but minor surgery may be needed. The jury's still out on this - I'll be seeing a dermatologist at the end of the month.
I can't help but wonder if this is God's way of upping the ante for me to let me test the limits of my ability to cope with difficulties.

And I'll do my best to manage my time and effort as best as I can. That high blood pressure scare I had last semester shook me up pretty good. From now on, my mantra will be 'Just put in your best effort, and accept whatever happens'.
Besides, I don't see myself screwing up my final year so long as the effort's there... unless if I do something fantastic like setting the lab on fire. Heheh.
