In other news, I'm currently reading a wiki article on the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914.
Frankly speaking, I find the way the different combatants in WWI were pulled into the conflict to be a really, really tragic chain of events. I I believe it can be summed up as follows:
1. A Serb terrorist assassinates the Archduke.
2. Austria-Hungary vows to take revenge on Serbia, but only with the help of their good friend Germany.
3. Russia saw both Austria-Hungary and Germany ganging up on its good friend Serbia, and pledges to come to its aid.
4. Germany has to play punk with Russia as a result, but because France is a good friend of Russia (and has its own grievances against Germany), France has to be fought with as well.
5. Germany activates the Schlieffen Plan and invades France through Belgium... and so Belgium gets into the conflict.
6. Britain was committed to come to Belgium's aid should they be attacked... and so they came.
Aieeee..... and I still have yet to talk about the US, the Italians, the Balkan nations, and the Ottoman Empire. -

the italians were quite sway. they signed the treaty with germany thinking it'd be nice to have a big brother watching their back...forgetting that if big brother decides to go to war, they are also required to join in, even though its none of their tai chi

I pity the Ottoman Empire even more.... they chose the wrong side and got their empire completely broken up and dismantled at the end of the war.
It has been argued that the current volatility of Middle East has its roots in the dismantling of the stabilising presence of the Ottoman Empire.... though exactly just how 'stabilising' the Ottomans were is open to debate. -
