before marriage is kaur after marriage is singhOriginally posted by the Bear:and so it spreads
my division people going through the papers (hey! we are corporate communications after all) and came across the story of the guy with the fake certificates... but the employers helped him and all that..
the clerical officer asked "why the woman is Ivy Singh-Lim and not Kaur? "
then... (wait for it)
she said, "maybe like you say, the PM's husband.. that one is actually a man"
.... and so it spreads
Actually this is really interesting. Did she marry a Sikh?Originally posted by shinta:before marriage is kaur after marriage is singh
like my sec sch form teacher... her name was satvindar/satvinder kaur
but we all call her mrs singh...
at least tts what they wrote in the sch time table..
I just thought generally after the woman is married, she just takes on the husband's surname.Originally posted by ShrodingersCat:Actually this is really interesting. Did she marry a Sikh?
Cos I thought their surnames become Singh only because.. well.. they marry male Sikhs, therefore take up the 'male' portion of the name
I didn't know that even if she married a non-Sikh, she has to change her surname to Singh too?
yeah generally that's the caseOriginally posted by honeymouse:I just thought generally after the woman is married, she just takes on the husband's surname.
For example the woman's maiden name is Wong (Miss Wong) and her husband's surname is Tan. So after married, she will be addressed as Mrs Tan.
Hmmm.... I always thought Singh was just a family name.....Originally posted by ShrodingersCat:yeah generally that's the case
but for Sikhs - all males just take on the affix of Singhs and all females Kaurs after their names.
Sort of like Malay Bin and Binte (followed by father's name) or Tamil, s/o and d/o (father's name)
So technically I wonder if Singh is a surname to begin with, and if not, how does it function to 'change' after marriage?
It depends if the female wants to lose their maiden name or not. Some women keep their maiden name after married, some keep part of it (hyphenated name eg Mrs. Lim-Peh) or some change to become the same as husband's (that's my case. I decided to change my last name after married!).Originally posted by the Bear:sort of like Miss Peh gets married to Mr Lim... and she gets a hyphenated name and is addressed as Mrs. Lim-Peh
anyway, the lady in question was Mrs Ivy Singh-Lim
i'm in the office and it's day 8...
i'm dead tired and will be shopping for a new digital camera soon
For ease of use i just use Ms. Don't know why it is such an unpopular choice when we need to tick off.. a lot of forms still use MissOriginally posted by honeymouse:It depends if the female wants to lose their maiden name or not. How was your weekend, bear?
I think it'd have to do with patience than practicality.Originally posted by the Bear:my weekend?
it was crap.. i had to work both day
and here i am at work again.. Day 8.. 11 more days to go after this..
and among other things, my iMac is in the shops because it's easier than calling AppleCare in because i'm not going to be in for ages so can't make an appointment with them to come visit my place..
sometimes, i wonder if my sense of practicality causes people to raise eyebrows.. i brought my iMac to the shop, the guy there was unable to grasp why i would bring it in when i could call in the techs to my place even when he knew i would not be available at home for ages...

but if u have tons of things to do.. u should delegate such work to the lower level staff, otherwise they'll be so free!Originally posted by the Bear:i dunno.. even at work, i do things just because it'll be done... but the others look at me as if "hey! why are you doing this when you should get the junior officers or the clerks to do it!"
i wonder.. i bring the payment voucher to the finance side, get their acknowledgement, come back and file it.. it's done.. besides, i'm free at that time..
they will get the clerks to do it..
i mean, i've always been "i'm not going to ask people to do things i won't do myself"
oh well.. i'll just stick to whatever i'm doing now
Sometimes you'll need to learn to delegate though otherwise you'll end up having too much on your plate. And you wonder why you stay at work till late while others can leave at 5pm.Originally posted by the Bear:i dunno.. even at work, i do things just because it'll be done... but the others look at me as if "hey! why are you doing this when you should get the junior officers or the clerks to do it!"
