just throwing ideas in the air: at that price, couldn't you go with a regular furnace/air conditioner combo installation?Originally posted by jetta:The estimate the Sears guy gave me is *gulp* $5300 after a $250 promo discount, a 10% first visit discount and a 10% assoc. discount, for the middle of the range model. I'm calling a few other companies for estimates too. The thing is, I'm very familiar with the Sears warranty and I know it's almost all-encompassing. I'm trying to educate myself online, re: the competition's warranty.
And yes, I'm replacing it all. Oh and that inside unit is the air handler.
I'm getting a heat pump, which provides both heating and cooling, so it's a combo system in essence. The air handler has to match the heat pump so as to circulate conditioned air throughout the house. The more efficient the handler, the less the heat pump has to work.Originally posted by Meia Gisborn:just throwing ideas in the air: at that price, couldn't you go with a regular furnace/air conditioner combo installation?
When my mum was fielding tenants for our vacant room in Sg, she told me about smelly Chinamen. She says after "interviewing" a couple of them, no more interviews.Originally posted by elindra:OMG I had THE LUCK to smell this China man today
WTF he smells like he had 1 week of sweat and stale ciggies on him
I almost barfed even though I caught a whiff
Seriously it is a good thing I didn't eat breakfast coz 1 whiff of him and I got a surge from my stomach and my mouth was filled with gastric juices and I was perfectly fine this morning
Now I feel ill![]()
Nope. Not a problem. I only have a rudimentary idea of how heat pumps work in home heating and cooling.Originally posted by jetta:I'm getting a heat pump, which provides both heating and cooling, so it's a combo system in essence. Sorry if I'm talking down to you, it's really not my intention.
Yes, you're right. Heat pumps are better suited here than up there. I have to tell you that even with your rudimentary knowledge of a/c's, you're still *much* better than the average a/c customer I get at work. *mimicking: BTU? What's that? Give me anything you have in stock. I'll *make* it work.Originally posted by Meia Gisborn:Nope. Not a problem. I only have a rudimentary idea of how heat pumps work in home heating and cooling.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but heat pumps are cost effective only if the variation in temperature through the year is small, right? In other words, they wouldn't work well here in the midwest, where we can have up to a 120°F variance in temperature between winter and summer.
I don't blame your mumOriginally posted by jetta:When my mum was fielding tenants for our vacant room in Sg, she told me about smelly Chinamen. She says after "interviewing" a couple of them, no more interviews.
Perhaps it's time for the Singapore government to step in and launch a "Let's Bathe Daily" campaign.Originally posted by elindra:You think I wanna smell smelly ppl
But I have a very sensitive nose
I detect scents easily
I had to buy some milo to drink to settle my stomach
The good thing is that 80% of the time my nose is blocked up with sinus but I have been using a nasel spray lately so that my nose is not so sensitive for the trip and I can smell everything clearly
MY god
The smell
I hope that you don't have allergies. Many people here do. I had a friend in Hawaii who was allergic to grass of all things. And she was my mowing buddy.Originally posted by elindra:You think I wanna smell smelly ppl

Mum loves coconut oil. She grew up in a Penang kampung where Chinese were/are a minority. Needless to say, the tenant we have is a nice Indian girl.Originally posted by elindra:I don't blame your mum
Alot of them smell like garbage dumps
I mean ppl say Indians smell but seriously China men smell at least 10x worse
And the Indians that smell are those that use a liberal amount of coconut oil but don't wash it off properly, otherwise they are ok
I doOriginally posted by jetta:I hope that you don't have allergies. Many people here do. I had a friend in Hawaii who was allergic to grass of all things. And she was my mowing buddy.![]()
Poor thing. I guess I'm one of the lucky few. Although when I first moved stateside and heard of allergies, I was waiting for an allergy to hit me. I'm still waiting. *touch wood*Originally posted by elindra:I do
I"m allergic to grass and pollen
Already got a whole bunch of meds which I am already on so that I don't have a reaction when I'm there
That's the reason why I don't like Spring as that's the time of the year I suffer from hayfever and I constantly sneeze, have itchy eyes and itchy throat!!!Originally posted by elindra:I do

Do we have even more Chinamen in Sg now?
Isn't it interesting how some people are less affected than others? I feel for you honeymouse. I hope you run into problems when passing through customs.
The hubster has a friend who inherited allergies from both his parents, the poor thing. His nose is constantly running, his skin is blotchy, his eyes are almost always red. This same friend joined the Navy together with the hubster but he got turned down because of his severe allergies. But guess what this guy does for a living? He works for the Nintendo helpline. If you ever get stuck on a game, he's the one you call.![]()

Isn't the government imposing some kind of quota on foreign labour? My mum told me that the unit below our flat in Sg has been rented out to six Chinamen and they are as loud as heck. The narrow corridor is now bike parking. Thank goodness they live below us and not above.Originally posted by Wanda:The PRC ppl are everywhere! And they are usually loud!
On some days, just by the sounds of conversations that we hear, I thought I was at some place in China.![]()
