I made a total of seven bags out of remnants. The Hawaiian print fabric I had left over from making curtains for my son's room. The stripey fabric is my favourite and I've had that for several years. Whenever I visit Sg, I will pay a visit to my favourite fabric shop at the old Causeway checkpoint and see what he has. I've come to know the uncle well and he always gives me a good price. Every time I visit Sg, I have to leave one suitcase empty to haul fabrics back.
Here's a smaller tote I made, since I had more fabric left.
And a messenger bag.
Here's the first one I made. I used regular canvas so that I could learn from my mistakes before using better fabrics. The handles/webbing are the most expensive. US$2.50 a yard.

I can see you're really good at the sewing...like the blue lining at the top of the stripey bag. That's a really nice detail. Do you have a sewing machine that can do fanciful and zig-zag sewing? Hey, this one looks exactly like those store-bought travel bags... like when you're travelling and you run out of packing space and need to get an extra bag to pack your shopping home....that kind of bag.Originally posted by jetta:Here's the first one I made. This is the binding I used for the edging. I'm not good at sewing. I'm only good at sewing straight lines. I can pretty much sew curtains and bags, that's about it. My sewing machine has slightly more than the basic features but I mostly use the basic stuff. If you make your own curtains, you will feel a sense of achievement and that will make you want to do more. Every place we've moved to, I've always made my own curtains. Fabrics in Sg are cheap so I always buy when I visit Sg, although there is a much wider selection here. You know lah, the older you get, the less you mind. -

Thank you. That was the intention I had. The supermarkets and stores here have started selling canvas bags because San Francisco has banned plastic bags and other cities might follow soon. I refuse to buy canvas bags sold at the stores because they want US$5 for a simple and small bag. Even though it costs slightly more for me to do it myself, I don't care. At least I can customise the design and fabric.
