the modules i flunked are pretty easy modules..Originally posted by Fatum:it was intellectually challenging ... and I like solving problems ... and that was what kept me going .... I suppose computer science NOT being engineering helps ....
but i'm definitely not geeky in the way other people are ... i don't get fascinated by sim lim, or the latest linux releases or anything like that ... I don't subscribe to tech magazines, and I certainly don't contribute to any tech blogs ...

Perhaps, but the learning process is the result too no?Originally posted by ShrodingersCat:u are classic example of entity learners produced by our education system
focusing on the results and not from the learning process
afraid to take risk because afraid to fail - that's why always must try and be right as often as possible.

Oh... and how about this one....
My tuition kid's Chemistry teacher forced her class to memorise the chemical formula of every single chemical in the syllabus.
That is to say, she has to memorise the chemical formulae of sodium hydroxide, potassium nitrate, silver sulphate, aluminium carbonate, etc etc.... literally hundreds of them.
I slapped my forehead and told her straight in the face: 'When your teacher was your age, she DID NOT memorise the formula of all these chemicals.'
Then I simply taught her to remember the formulae of the important anions (sulphate, carbonate, nitrate) and taught her how to couple that information with the Periodic Table to get the required formula.
E.g. for sodium carbonate, just remember that carbonate has a charge of -2. From the Periodic Table, you can see that sodium has an oxidation state of +1. And so, coupling these two pieces of information together, you can get the formula of sodium carbonate: Na2CO3.
And suddenly, Chemistry became so much easier for my tuition kid - all because I did what that freakin' teacher should have done in the first place.

And you may notice that after being in a/cs for a few years, they become "inward-looking " and fail to see beyond what they do, and they wonder why others question the way they do things...coz to them, everything is must follow the books in the exact one way that they know, whether or not it makes sense anymore.![]()

err mebbe ur history teacher failed to do that, but that is definitely an essential part of learning history.Originally posted by hisoka:history, yeah it prints out what happend when and how, not sure abotu the why thoughmight be politics. thats about it. end of the day not useful for anything so far.... If it was structured to be different and let the students figure out why the pple did what and how they could have prevented their downfall; it might be useful though

this kinda stuff only happened when me n nel talked abt certain stuff cos i saw them somewhereOriginally posted by ShrodingersCat:err mebbe ur history teacher failed to do that, but that is definitely an essential part of learning history.
However, learning history doesn't need to be limited to classroom or curriculum, or what the teacher teaches.
at the very least, armed with the basic knowledge of who did what when and how, its really up to the individual to conjecture on why and what else could have been done. It will still be useful to the person even if this is not examinable, and not part of the curriculum.
