  i had this experience. when i was a system administrator in this computer system setup, the computer room was protected by halon gas. i used to wonder if the halon gas ever work. one fine day, it just exploded and release all the gases. it was fun to watch with the whole room covered by white gas. I ran into the room to see if anyone was in the computer room. later someone to me that the gas was poisonous. guess i was naive.
  
  this "gas release show" cost my company $50,000 to recharge and arm it again

  there was almost a fire in the server room when i was a sys-ad too..
  
  the server room airconditioner broke down and within 5 minutes, the place went from 12 degrees to 50 degrees and rising
  
  i just called up the FM and gave them hell about the airconditioning.. because there were backup airconditioners which didn't work at all...
  
  i think another few minutes, the server room would blow up

  most companies have this philosophy of "save the equipment.. the hell with the people"
  
  halon puts out the fire immediately because it displaces oxygen...

  well this was our traffic (no, not road traffic but telephone traffic) computer system. a 300MB hard disk then weigh 10kg and the computer cost $millions. today a micro server would do the job
  
  halon is a fire extinguishing gas, meant to save equipment like what bear said. otherwise a sprinkler system can do the job

  yes..
  
  there will be warning lights, and you are given a few seconds to evacuate the room.. after which, the doors close and the gas is released..
  
  not very safe for the people but the computer systems are saved

  Sometimes people practice crisis drills like fire drills etc so much so that they follow according to the letter and forget to adapt... because ppl forget that crisis are uncontrolled.... and ppl need to adapt quickly....
