The youths in poorer countries have to walk a long distance just to get to school and then work to support themselves when they are not attending school!
Ok, even if we don't talk about extreme poverty, look at our neighbouring Asians - the PRC's, Koreans, Japanese, Taiwanese... all of them put a high premium on education and esp on learning English. -
