I object! If we're gonna rely on just your family, the result would be what we see, a general decline in the use of dialects.On the other hand, schools are also where most kids pick up dialect, eg. c*** b***, k** n** n**......and so on, so.....

The govt's choice mah. I remember back in the '70's, in the days of black-and-white bulky TV sets, Hong Kong drama series were shown in the original Cantonese language. So shiok.
And then, LKY decided to 'force' Chinese Singaporeans to learn Chinese, and in typical non-negotiable style, no more dialects were allowed to air on TV. Only Redifusion had dialect channels. I remember many a lazy afternoon spent dozing off in the hot sun as the Redifusion radio broadcast in Hokkien / Teochew : Dai Keh Ohk Hua Ger (Everyone Learn Mandarin).
Darnit... makes me feel like some relic now!

Better not let MOE handle the dialect-speaking thing, otherwise the poor Singapore students will have yet ANOTHER examinable subject on their hands sooner or later.

well i think the clan assn can take part for tis matteranyway they've contributed much to the education scene past and present

Orh... not so bad. Actually the best way to pick up any language is to keep watching shows in that language, with English subtitles, of course. I picked up quite a few Korean phrases that way.
Now, I know how to scold / swear in English, Mandarin, Hokkien, Teochew, Korean, Japanese, French and maybe soon, in Greek and Italian! Machiam like pai kia like that!

We just have to make sure that things don't go overboard and spark off some clan riots.
That will be like turning the clock back to the '60's and '70's! I remember that English was adopted as the main language here to unify all the different races, as well as to give a commercial competitive advantage. -

I think growing up with my Cantonese paternal Ah Ma and my Hokkien + Peranakan Ah Gong and my maternal Teochew Ah Ma taught me more about my roots than classroom lessons.
I think the leaders who run Singapore should stop thinking with clockwork precision. I fear what kind of dialect syllabus they will introduce in schools. -

There's a silly bridge in Southbank, across the Yarra River, where there are glass plaques of various countries with inscriptions on them. For Singapore, there's the totally misinformed data that the Chinese living there are Hokkiens. Fireman looked at that, turned to me, looked at me funny, and declared loudly for everyone on the bridge to hear, "Why, you are a Hokkien noodle, my love!"

I confirm your doubts that it's not 'pure'.
However, as long as the Hong Kongers and Vietnamese Chinese who also speak Cantonese can understand me, that's good enough.
When my PRC colleague told me that my spoken Mandarin is "hen hao", I almost melted into the ground!
