It's not a problem, actually. Click on the smileys that initially appear, and a few more similar ones will load. I got used to it quickly, unlike the previous window which required you to scroll.

that being said, people lament the poor service standards in Singapore... but i'll ask if they are willing to pay slightly more for their groceries or will the supermarkets actually bother to train their staff and maintain their records properly..
i was at Giant.. the lady in the checkout before me had a few things beeped with the wrong price.. a raw spring chicken showed $7.99... now there is no way it is that price.. and a few other things too.. the checkout chick is probably some Indian National wife of an employment pass holder trying to earn some extra pocket money... she could barely speak English.. but she was at a loss what to do.. got the supervisor who is severely overworked... the matter wasn't resolved..
then it was my turn... whatever the heck i was buying, they didn't update the system.. UP = $4.99 but 2 for $5.90 says the sign.. but in the scanner, no difference.. the checkout chick didn't know what to do.. and just stood there.. i asked her to cancel the whole transaction and i'll go to the customer service.. but she just stood there, not knowing what to do... while the line got held up...
finally, the floor manager, dealing with a case of a disgruntled customer (not me) who was returning moldy biscuits purchased the day before told the customer service lady to "just sell him" (me) and he'll check the system...
they should:
- train their staff properly
- provide adequate manning (it was 11:20am and there are 10 counters with lines up to 10 customers each??)
- beat the shit out of the IT fellas
- train their staff properly..
the staff was polite, good natured and trying to help but they were under a lot of stress, overworked and most of the time unable to do what is necessary of them because they are not trained well enough...
GEMS and all that.. screw that.. pay our workers enough and instill in them a professionalism and they will automatically provide wonderful service...

I can tell you the service industry don't give any training at all for the service staff.
Last time when I was a student and worked as a banquet waitress, my first day on the job was without training.
No one told me what to do, how to serve the food etc :x
And they expect perfection

But at least say since you have no experience and come like an hour earlier so you can familarize on the correct way to hold the tray, how to serve and cut the fish etc ma
