Bending over backwards isn't and it can mean betraying yourself and the values you hold dear, just to make someone happy, and that is something you can do temporarily, but not permanently, because it is just not you.
For instance, I have no interest whatsoever in Cricket and if I force myself to like Cricket and immerse myself in Cricket and suddenly become some sorta Cricket fanatic just to please a boyfriend, then that's bending over backwards and it's a bit too contrived, and probably will not last.
That is my interpretation of "bending over backwards".
that's the thing - at first I could not tell the difference.
i.e. taking the cricket example - i have no interest in cricket.. and I would DEFINITELY not bend over to just please a boyfriend or a husband.
But I guess compromise means, if he really wants to go to a game, I would accompany him if he wants me to. But initially I would refuse to do even such things that cos I held on to my independence a lot. I enjoy doing things on my own and found it hard to see why he needs company to do some things I don't like to do.

The crying (OMG I HATE THAT AND I LOVE MY PEACE)
And when they can talk it's worse!!!
And you have to teach them and worry about their studies and company they keep etc etc

Actually all the Chinese fortune tellers who read my palms told me two things I didn't particularly enjoy hearing :
1) that I'd fall gravely ill sometime mid-life and may die from it, or may overcome it and live longer; and
2) that my spouse and I will at one stage, almost divorce, but that we'll get back together.
Eeee-yerh... sometimes knowing is not a good thing! ![]()

Yeah, the crying and temper tantrums are awful!
When they talk back, and refuse to be good, it's so frustrating.
And when they become teens, it's worse - what if your daughter gets pregnant? What if your son gets someone else's daughter pregnant? Eee-yerh! ![]()

Some factors you can't overcome.
Mom told me something at the start of this year that kinda spooked me. She refused to give me details, but when I told her that this year seems to be much smoother for me and that the past few years had been utterly suay, she said, "Yeah, I know. I was also told that you will undergo a horrible time the past few years but that this year will be the start of great changes." I was a bit shocked!! I pressed her for details, and she said that she had gone to 'someone' to have my fortune told. I think the fortune teller must have told her to go easy on me too because I would have been shouldering a burden that's hard to bear and I could have been easily pushed over the limit, so no wonder, for the past two years or so, she had been extremely gentle with me, unlike her usual style.
Thing is, she never told me all this until it had all passed. Unknowingly, to some extent, our future may already have been charted.
I think unless one is an atheist, it's hard to believe that everything in the future lies in our hands alone.

I bring you back down to Planet Earth... There are lots of Vietnamese here - some have integrated successfully, others still stick to their 'clansmen' and haven't exactly become Aussie-nised. Let's talk about those who aren't Aussie-nised, cause they would have been born in Vietnam.
They tend to be loud, push you around, cut queues, spit, and sometimes, the food hygiene leaves much to be desired.
You talk about peasant girl... I hope you know what you're asking for! Harharharhar!! ![]()

That's because women in the first world know there is more to life than getting married and having kids :P
And they are also aware of the environmental impact of having kids
And they also start thinking that if the world we are in is already so tough and so polluted... won't it be worse for the kids?
Plus, work and other commitments take up lots of time :P

That's one thing we have in common! ![]()
When I was a teen, I got tired of having to look after my brother, cause we were both latchkey kids, and at times, when I really really wanted to be alone, I literally kicked him out of our bedroom, tell him that I'm going to lock myself in for 1 hour, and did just that!
![]()
From what you told me about Nak's son, I would have had to fight the same temptation to slap him too!
Hell, I hope my brother and his wife brings up my niece well, otherwise, biangz, her aunt will give her one good scolding! ![]()
