Ever heard of reckless drivers on the road? The same applies to the shipping lines. There'll always be crazy idiots who go fast, overtake without signalling and ignoring the rules in general.
Wan Hai Lines in particular.
On the 1st occasion, I was on board the last frigate for its maiden voyage when this container vessel, making way at 25 knots (!) cut our bow perpendicularly forcing us to actually go ASTERN. That was in addition to 6 horn blast.
For the uninitiated, 1 blast = turning right, 2 blast = turning left, 6 blast = AAHHHH!!!!!!!!
The 2nd and 3rd occasion happened today. The first was at Keppel harbour when this crazy guy once again tried to make history repeat by attempting to cut our bow. The atmosphere at the bridge was fucking tense at the officer bellowed for high-acceleration mode and a speed of 18 knots (leaving the tugs behind), and the comms peeps kept trying to communicate to the big container vessel to turn left to avoid us. Eventually it did, but not before the 6 blasts and a lot of praying and a frantic hard left by the container vessel at the last moment as we stuck to our guns and powered ahead.
The second made for entertainment, shortly after a report that a Wan Hai container vessel (CO: Not again!) was sighted on parallel course with us, we watched as the crazy fella overtake 2 oil tankers with less than 2 cables to spare on each side at 20 knots. In seaman terms, its like a bike going between 2 cars at 200km/h.
See? That's why there are accidents on the high seas thanks to crazy ships like these
