I'm okay with helping the poor to get by especially if they have disabled and ill family members to take care of. A number of them here deserve better hand-outs.
What I don't want to see is however is unemployment becoming more viable than being gainfully employed. The fruitcakes in SC have forgotten that welfare was started with the best of intentions in other countries, but crankpots took over and took it to the extreme. Druggies, bums and chavs started getting hand-outs for all kinds of things including vacations, and even boob jobs and botox became subsidised.
We've gone the opposite route, which is why people find it refreshing, but perhaps we could also pull back a little. -

If Singapore had nice welfare handouts, I'd be one of the unemployed bums because I'm extremely lazy and would choose not to work full time if I could.

That's what a bum who was interviewed on TV said, "WHY should I bother to wake up early to go to work when I can claim more than minimum wages by remaining unemployed?"

well .... I just spent the last three days looking at Singapore in the fresh eyes of a Malaysian who's also a Canadian PR .....
I must say .... we are damm shiok over all .....
she's now sending resumes around biopolis ......
I noticed things that I've never noticed before about Singapore ....
The roads are all nicely paved everywhere, unlike canada, the streets are clean and pristine, even the heartlands, the heartland housing estates are all spruced and greened up, like the most expensive condos overseas, which we Singaporeans never notice cos, hey, it's just home .... we were out till 2 or 3am roaming the streets at night, and she reminded me that we could never have done it in saskatoon, edmonton, or calgary, where she now lives, or KL, of course ....
