SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge may soon be rigged with a safety net to deter people from jumping to their deaths from the world-famous landmark, official records showed Monday.
The Golden Gate Transportation District has voted in favour of installing the net pending the results of studies into its environmental impact, according to a statement on the district's website.
The plastic-covered steel net would extend six metres on either side of the bridge and would cost between 40-50 million dollars, local media reported. It is likely to be several years before the netting is installed, reports said.
The Golden Gate district voted 14 to 1 in favour of installing the netting at a meeting on Friday attended by around 50 people including psychiatrists, suicide prevention experts and relatives of bridge suicides.
More than 10 million tourists visit the Golden Gate Bridge annually, but the landmark also has the distinction of being the world's number one suicide destination. The number peaked in 1970 with 40 reported suicides from the famous span.
Golden Gate suicides were the subject of a 2006 documentary entitled "The Bridge" which chronicled the stories of a handful of 2004 suicide jumpers.
Since the bridge was built in 1937, at least 1,250 people have jumped to their deaths according to local coroners. - AFP/ar

She did not declare her cash that was in excess of the stipulated amount too... and they are going to probably fine her too! ![]()

might be a good idea, since recession is here. ![]()
OMG!! The Australia Customs got the Federal Police involved in the case where the PRC student brought in a large amount of cash concealed in her luggage! ![]()

Very true! Or, they can always jump and land on that steel net, then crawl to the edge and throw themselves over anyways! ![]()

Those people who commit suicide that way and disrupt EVERYBODY ELSE's routine and travel plans are really TMD. Why can't they just OD or do something else at home that won't bother and inconvenience anyone else?
Drown her in abinsthe when she comes back to work =X

I thought the whole idea is to prevent people from throwing themselves onto the tracks?

Apparently, chocolates are alright. They won't even bother to check chocs although I tried to declare the chocs I had in my carry-on bag everytime.
Thing is, don't they realise that chocs might have nuts and seeds in them too?
I mean, sweets and snacks with seeds in them and chocs with nuts in them... sama-sama, innit? ![]()
seeds = new introduced plants which may have no natural "predators" or grazers and therefore may proliferate so much that the local flora is totally destroyed... much like hares, foxes and canetoads..
it has already happened in the US with some kind of asian tree that is choking up some parts of the Colorado river...
hidden crapload of money is problematic as it can be used for a lot of things... that includes paying off snakeheads, terrorists, syndicated crime.. and if people need to smuggle cash, they're up to no good.. most countries just require you to declare it.. you are allowed to bring it around when you declare it...

I guess they want to go out with a bang.
But the ones that send a chill down my spine are the women who purposely wear a bright red dress and jump, so that they can return to take revenge on those who wronged them.
I know someone whose sister did exactly that.
That's like the MRT putting up safety barriers to stop people from jumping onto the tracks
OMG!!! They may confiscate the more than AUD $10,000 in RMB the PRC student tried to bring in concealed in her luggage!
And the problem is, she only had AUD $100 in her purse and that's not enough to pay for the AUD $220 for the fine for bringing in undeclared food items of meat and nuts!!
