All gainfully employed adults are full of angst with regards to work.
So, tell me why people have children, knowing that sooner or later, their children will be subject to the stress and frustrations of the workplace? And things only get worse over the years, never better.
Maybe, people love the joy kids bring into their own lives but they don't really think about the struggles the children will have to go through as they grow older...
Maybe, some people think that having children cements their marriage together...
Or, there are folks who want to ensure that they leave a mark on planet earth by ensuring they have descendants to carry on their family line and perpetuate their genes generation after generation.
So, which of these reasons are not selfish?

Long time ago, I had this theory that people who choose to have kids probably have a more optimistic worldview than those who don't. However, time has since totally debunked that
There are those who feel it is a sort of social responsibility (I'm not kidding. I know some of these people)

Machiam "embodiment of hope for the future"... hope for what? More people to leave their carbon footprint on the world? Hopefully the children will increase the overall world population so that by virtue of sheer numbers, the %age of drunks and addicts would 'appear' to have decreased? Hope that when you are elderly and retired, you will have backup plans and moral and social support?
And, what if your children do not do it better?
One of the distinguishing features of homo sapiens is that unlike animals, we actually can have sex for pleasure, sex as an emotional crutch, sex due to sex addiction, etc. whereas animals experience union mainly for the purpose of genesis.

I still hold the view that as long as the kids are gainfully employed, not on drugs, or in jail, they should be happy liao. -

there'll be 16 small nieces and nephews of assorted ages coming to my house on saturday .... patches would go nuts again .... she plays very well with kids ....

I don't think the typical Singaporean parents will be that easily contented. I grew up with dad constantly comparing me to his friends' daughters, so me being obstinate, I'd compare him with my friends' fathers. Of course, it didn't go down well with him. -

it nice you are so positive. yes, kids are nice to play with but the responsibilities that comes with them. when they are sick, if they got into bad companies, when they don't do well academicially...........the list is long

That's a question I wanna ask God myself! No water rationing, just some soft sell attempt to encourage people not to waste water, which isn't really working cause sadly, a lot of people here don't really care.
