But what was disturbing was the recommendation to hire school cleaners that are priced below market rate...someone's granny is going to suffer or lose her job to a mainland Chinese.

you mean they aren't already mainland chinese or bangala?
that's the problem when you do "bestsourcing" of course these things aren't factored in as you cannot justify them well.
i had a lousy lunch :x :x

&*#$^ lah..
"best sourcing" the bunch of drivers = retiring the whole lot of drivers = now we have to source our own transport... even when we have vans sitting in the garage...

I mean that there are going to be even more of them...and they'll even start running the shops at Changi Airport. In Amsterdam there were already Indians and Arabs behind the counters at Schiphol.

they never do consider thing thoroughly. reminds me of transport claims. apparently taking bus/ mrt is fine even if it takes 1 hour longer

I recall seeing indians at the money changer at changi. not sure if they are local though.
we'll always have this problem of foreigners taking over the jobs of locals due to lower cost. But on the other hand, not letting them in at all will only make the locals get lazy and more expensive. quotas might be good, but how much?

how about this: i go city hall now to eat nice food, you come to my place and work!! =D
"Below market norms?"
What is this supposed to mean?
Doesn't it hold that govt agencies are usually the ones that take the lead?

I don't think what MOE was really a lapse, either.... as was pointed out, all MOE did was to reject bids that were too unrealistically low.
After all, if you charge below cost or even just above it, eventually your company's going to go kaput.
But the others (MDA, SPRING, et al) have plenty to answer for.
hey fudgey, ever eat at the sci canteen???
it.is.GROSS.

huh take the lead for what?
anyway i think below market norms means ridiculously cheap prices. Thing is, most of the time these companies either cut cornerrs to give you that price or are not sustainable.

But..."below market norms" won't make sense.
Then what's the market for? Unless of course they want more FTs to plug the gap.
Anyway the other serious implication is that this will depress the wages further in this type of jobs. And looking at the recession now, how about the aunties?

And one we have so much cheap labour, hey presto, we'll have a new "market norm".
on the bus driver thingy..i stand on their side rather..
i see pple abusing them scolding the bus driver for not stopping while they did not press the bell!! saying the bus should stop at every bus stop even the silly passenger did not indicate she is alighting nor indicating she wants to alight. Later her lame excuse : the door bell spoil, the driver should ask her if she wants to alight. But the rest of the passengers pressed bell and it rung and alight in other bus stops without any hitch..
bus driver drives long hours ..say reach bus station by 4.30am, work till 2pm plus.. go home rest and continue his shift from 6pm till midnight. sometimes, the bus got stuck in jam, they have no time for rest in between driving buses, no time to pee, no lunch..
I see a few very polite drivers greeting saying morning/hellos to the passengers when they board, all they get back a black face and being ignored altogether.. kindda of sad izzit ..
We should consider ourselves very lucky as we work in air-con office and lim kopi, surf net and going toilets anytime.

The bitch should've been given humble pie for lying through her teeth. I try to say 'thank you' if the driver waits for me to board when I'm still some distance away.
