I kinda remember reading somewhere that flu strains that spread more easily tend to be milder than those that don't spread so readily.Which kinda makes sense when you consider that SARS infected just under 300 people in Singapore but killed over 30 of them, while H1N1 infected over a thousand and has killed only one (and only because of underlying health issues, at that).
The 1918 Spanish Flu was an aberration to this rule, but then again, WWI was a major cause of it spreading so rapidly.
