our call centre is hopelessly understaffed for the load they face..most of the time, people have to wait for ages to get through..

Can't really compare because they require a different connection. Laptops use DDR2 now, if I'm not wrong. PCs use DDR3.
Performance wise, DDR2 is pretty much 3x slower than DDR3. By speed I don't mean the 'size' it comes in (ex 512mb, 1gb, 2gb) but the read, write and response speeds.
But if you're looking to upgrade, there are grades like DDR2-400, DDR2-533, DDR2-667, DDR2-800, DDR2-1066. 1066 being fastest.
DDR3-800, DDR3-1066, DDR3-1333, DDR3-1600 for the DDR3 series.
Wiki should have the speeds iirc.

the MacBook Pro uses DDR3..so.. not too bad then.. the normal MacBook uses DDR2
