I got an HP notebook with intel i5 core, 4g ram and half a tera harddisk ...
it's a nice supplement to the desktop ....
I got it cheap at best denki ....

I'm looking at a lightweight and very sexy-looking glossy red lappie, but balking at the fact that it doesn't have an optical DVD drive. I might just go for it because I can always get a portable USB DVD drive. Ah well, still thinking about it... We don't have lots of choices here.

Actually Fatum, you know what, I seriously contemplated flying back home for a short trip just so I can shop for a lappie there before my course begins. The only reason I'm not making the trip is cause flights are booked out till early Feb because of CNY. You guys are really spoilt for choice over there.

a netbook ? ...
I think you'd be better off getting a full sized lappie instead, usb optical drives, at least the ones I've used, tend to have read problems.
with the price of a netbook plus an optical drive, it makes more sense too.
or best yet, you should get it here and ship it over ....

Nope, not a netbook. A Dell Vostro... very sleek and very light. Portability is top on my list and this baby is a featherweight. Unfortunately the fact that the DVD reader was sacrificed to make it light is stopping me in my tracks.
I don't need a lappie urgently so I'll just wait and see.
I don't like the idea of shipping electronic items over because of guarantee and servicing issues. Plus, what if it arrives damaged?
Too many potential problems. Who knows, I just might make that quick trip back home in Feb...

Eventually I had 3 breakfasts! :P cos I woke up at 5 am (breakfast no. 1) but got hungry again about 8.30 am (breakfast no. 2).. and supposed to meet my friends for breakfast at 10.30 am (breakfast no. 3) :P :P :P
