I wouldn't say that we all started out on the exact same path.
Singapore started off with an authoritarian government. Taiwan and South Korea started off with military dictatorships.
The difference between these three countries and China is that Mao was a bloody idiot who saw progress solely in terms of output and saw intellectuals as blasphemous heathens.
He saw grain and steel output figures as holy writ and demanded all out progress in these two products - to the point where teachers abandoned their schools and doctors abandoned their hospitals to work at backyard steel furnaces.

anyway, i just made a run to clementi to drop my mom and her maid there coz they wanted to go roam around...
i'll be going to run some errands later.. i'm abandoning all thoughts of going swimming since it keeps drizzling

The cabbies in this forum are one screwed-up bunch.
I eff-ing hate taking taxis.
The other day, 5 of us needed to take cab to somewhere.
I was left with another who had no inkling of where the place is which of cos meant trouble.
Cabby: How do we go? AYE? Dunno-wat rd?
Us: We dunno.
Cabby: Ok, can we get lost?

Of cos we got ripped off. A comparison with the other group that took the cab revealed a fare price of 3-4 bucks higher although its just a 5-10km trip away.

they have no pride in their work.. all they can think of is short-term gain.. and any petty "advantages" they can get, no matter what consequences is grabbed..
that includes extra-marital sex which is "okay" to them as long as the wife doesn't know..
and they were discussing how they can milk "stupid passengers" and all that...

Once during NS I had to rush to Nee Soon Camp. So I flagged down a cab and said 'Nee Soon Camp'.
I was so damn tired that I fell asleep in the cab. I woke up just as the taxi was stopping in front of.... Khatib Camp.
Me: Uncle, what is this? I said Nee Soon Camp!
Uncle: Yes, this is Nee Soon Camp!
Me: This is KHATIB Camp! You see the sign on the front?!?!?!
Uncle: Yah, the name outside is Khatib Camp, but the camp inside is Nee Soon Camp!
Me: Uncle, this is Khatib Camp! Nee Soon Camp is at Transit Road!
Uncle: Transit Road is Transit Camp lah! This is Nee Soon Camp!
Me: APA INI TRANSIT CAMP! I'VE BEEN BASED AT NEE SOON CAMP FOR MANY MANY MONTHS! TAKE ME TO TRANSIT ROAD NOW!!!
The taxi uncle was still adamant that he was correct, but he agreed to take me to Transit Road.
And when we reached the end of Transit Road, lo and behold, the front entrance said: NEE SOON CAMP.
The uncle was so paiseh that he couldn't even look at me.
