Even the wages?
In the first place, I've no idea abt the 800 buses and tat $1.1bn, because the problem with the tpt routing system has to be reviewed, and use of bigger buses than single decks for most bus svs.
Also I've this to say, is SBS's bus ops making profit in the past 2 years?
The MRT profit is all because the gabrament spents the heafty upfront, else think why MTR is forced to develop properties at their MTR station in order to keep upfloat in the starting years in particular.
av, you also kena played with the system until you've no idea with what's going on elsewhere around the world.
If a privatised, publicly listed company operating in what is essentially a oligopolistic or monopolistic environment cannot stand on its own, the government might as well reverse course and nationalise public transport.

obviously a gift.

A 'one time measure' aka gift.
Of the 800 buses, 550 will be paid for by the Government, and the rest by operators SBS Transit and SMRT Corp.
The additional buses, equivalent to 20 years’ worth of fleet growth, will bump up the public bus fleet by 20 per cent. Their arrival depends on how quickly bus manufacturers can supply the fleet, and – more crucially – how quickly drivers can be hired.
All in, the Government is handing out a $1.1 billion aid package meant to cover the operating costs of the vehicles over 10 years. It is understood to include salaries for drivers.
Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam had announced the measure in his Budget speech last Friday, and had said the $1.1billion was a ‘one-off’ measure.
For the bus operators, it will not be a case of generating additional revenue out of capital assets they will have obtained for free. Sources reckon the operators will be ‘persuaded’ to increase service frequency and raise drivers’ salaries, so the net effect may well be revenue-neutral to the operators.

What does (or doesn't) Hri Kumar (the MP I didn't vote for) understand by what the Constitution says about holding by-elections in a "timely fashion" and "as often as the prescribed occasion arises"?

Hri Kumar is an idiot.
And in a real first world democracy, the elections department would be telling the prime minister to take a flying leap after what he said.
It would be the elections department that decide when by-elections are to be called, based on the constitution, and not the whims and facies of any of the political parties.
Its a gift.
Much as it reeks, I would say we need it.
We have already wallowed in this shit for so long that we need some short-term measures.
So much for "competition".

actually based on what the 2 have said, the constitution says that the PM makes the call on when to call the by-elections.
The problem is when, which is what they are arguing about.

Yes, that is true for Singapore's constitution. Its actually quite funny that its the president who officially calls for one but he must get the prime minister's permission first LOL
Our PM is obviously stonewalling because he does not see the PAP candidate doing well in Hougang.

Yup, our constitution is just weird, or rather designed by the PAP for their own advantage. Not that I can logically blame them. Who won't set things up for their own advantage?
If any are to blame it would be the individual Singaporeans, past and present.
sis just made some fudge a while ago but it was commandeered by my aunt...
I think Bill Gates did a huge service for the world by giving us MS Excel.
Otherwise its because I have no exposure to better softwares.

he copied Lotus123
Anyway, word has it that Tan Jee Say has his sights on the Hougang seat.
If he really does contest this election, I can no longer discredit the conspiracy theory that he's just a mole for the ruling party.
After all, it would be a cold day in hell before he wins Hougang. However, he would effectively split the opposition vote. He doesn't even need to split the opposition vote right down the middle - just a few percentage points his way would be enough to wreck everything.
Hell, I still lay the blame for Tony winning the Presidency on both his feet and that of Tan Kin Lian.

there seems to be lots of moles to wreck everything...
CSJ for wrecking the opposition when CST was making them credible
Gomez for wrecking it for WP twice
TJS for wrecking the presidential elections

Tan Jee Say is an opportunist. And yes, I am still pissed Tan Cheng Bok lost by a hair because of him

i'm still trying to figure out the "opportunist" bit because most of the contests he's been in, he didn't stand a snowflake in hell's chance...
or is he just an attention-whore like i think CSJ was?

He probably enjoys the attention and playing the role of the underdog.
There's no way in hell he could be seeking office for altruistic reasons. There must be something he's hoping to foist on the rest of us, even though the people have denied him the mandate twice, and it could be his overhyped economic proposals....
There was a scrambler bike in the barriers along Lornie Road this evening, and someone lay on the road bleeding profusely in the arms of people who pulled over. It wasn't a pleasant sight.

In many places it's a virtual monopoly, especially in Hong Kong's case.
The past for our part was telling as well... I can give quite a no of examples..
The pre-SBS era, it all failed terribly. And funny thing was, how come double decks and wat's not appeared after the monopoly merger?
The Changi Airport buses weren't really operated by SBS initially, it was by the Scheme B & CSS buses. Latter later gave up for some reasons, SBS ended up took over in 1983. I guess one issue was considering back then where the new towns or estates like Ang Mo Kio, Queenstown were located and location of the Airport, the distance is way too long to be covered, a lot of buses would be required.
Nationalising isn't right either. For, put it this way, you'll still be sandwiched. Either raise wages or raise the fare in direct govt's name.
You sure you want the gabrament to run something of day to day ops when they can't be bothered w/ ground ops?
Busy busy tonight...
