I have a few ideas already:
Feasibility of converting SMRT into a social biz.
The effectiveness of monetary policies.
Microfinance in SG.
And economic trends in East Asia, in particular, the opening up of Myanmar.
Hmmmm....I still have some time to think about these.
how about "how the people in power abused GDP as an economic indicator and the social costs of their gaming the system" ?
There's plenty of material on that already.
For that reason, we have people like Joseph Stiglitz (a very interesting jew) and Amartya Sen (a very interesting Indian) working together now to come up with a more useful indicator than those already in practice like HDI, which is actually used in UN.
In fact, GDP is widely known to be a very lousy indicator with plenty of loopholes that you just mentioned, can be exploited, misinterpreted and lied upon.
And now news has come that China may have been inflating its growth rate, and that tells as much.
Besides, it is perplexing to me why people are fixated on GDP. By definition, it just means "value of everything produced within the borders".As you know, one can just produce in Singapore, and then ship it away. And our overseas assets aren't counted in this measure. And including the production of a robot to replace a spoilt one isn't gonna raise our income level, so capital depreciation should not be included also!
I'm sure you guys have heard of GNP and NNI (Net National Income) which are based on GDP but in fact take into account of all these problems. But we don't use those as measures as widely.

"The Singapore Experience"
If one enters the library of NUS, you would be shocked.
We have rows upon rows of data on other countries.
But one miserable shelf of data that is not entirely consistent, and that's SG data.
I almost vommited blood trying to measure housing affordability here.
Tells you something about control of media in more ways than one?
And the worst part was when we contacted the dept of stats to enquire about relevant data, they said, sure, np, we can give you. but ___ bucks please.
I cant remember the exact sum, but its a fucking tens of something.

which is why maybe this research is needed
I had heard stories to the tune of this before, from my friends in the history department.
But having to experience all these in person was still something.
And I read the thesis of the previous valedictorian.....
How Much Does An Additional Year of Schooling Improve Skills in Reading, Mathematics and Science?
But the approach used was really something far beyond me. But the conclusion was really interesting.
Many believe economics to be on gdp and stuff, but actually, the approach is used on many many other areas.

yeah.. or for some ideas, should have a look at the Freakonomics books.. those are very interesting too...
to me, economics is actually the measurement of cause and effect, and the costs to making these decisions
I remembered reading Gary Becker's controvesial article that suggests that economics can be applied to everything.
Even on sucide cases.![]()
And it went something like: Person does a cost-benefit analysis before deciding to end his life.

well, it is.. to a disturbed mind, death may be preferable to living on at that time and the person chooses death...
it may not be right but to the disturbed mind, it is worth it...
and also remember this about economists, engineers, scientists and whatever.. to an expert at hammering, everything can be solved with a hammer
