RM3 / L isn't exactly terribly cheap...

Yes.
It's not like they were heading for Singapore anyway or hijacked the ship. Rescuing 40 shipwrecked people is not a signal that our doors are open to all.
In the end when it comes to such trans-national issues, SG has long been known to walk the fine line of not being neutral, and still having an opinion.
Taking on refugees will also mean taking their baggage of political problems with them.
So because of the faults of their politicians or whatever power-hungry oppressors, the poor refugees.....become poor refugees, with no place to call home.
I won't call SG a kind place, I won't say also that SG was right in turning people who need help away.
The unfortunate reality is that we have a NIMB mentality because we are afraid of jumping into the fray, for good or bad.
Ironically, SGreans were themselves chided by MIW for the said mentality.
In the end, the world would be a so much better place if people can let go or what they hold so dear...to the point of stopping the creation of victims, albeit uncompensated ones. Such is the situation of many heart-wrenching places in the world.
really?
Seremban then...?

From what I read, they weren't accepted because we had "no space" for them. I don't know yet if they were arrested and deported.
Hang on - there was a refugee camp at 25 Hawkins Road for those who were picked up by ships. All of them have returned home or were sent away to other countries that accepted them ASAP. http://remembersingapore.wordpress.com/2011/07/01/vietnamese-boat-people-in-singapore/
