How is their coins like? I mean their denomination.Imagine paying 177500 with 1ruppiah coin...
Their coins are almost totally worthless, and are rarely used.
I only had three coins of 100 rupiah each, and I never used them. And I really meant 'worthless', because 1 SGD = 7800 rupiah.
Over there, 'small change' means 1000, 2000, and 5000 rupiah banknotes, which are all still less than 1 SGD anyway.
Complicating matters is the way they casually tell you the prices. The salesgirl may say things like 'empat lima'..... which is literally 'four five'. The problem is that that could mean either 45 000 or 4 500, and I would get frustrated having to ask 'hundreds or thousands?'
Oh, and at one department store I went to, they had an extremely inefficient way of buying clothes. You had to hand over the clothes you want to a nearby salesgirl, get her to handwrite you an invoice, pay at the cashier with that invoice, then find the same salesgirl and hand her the cashier's receipt before you can get your clothes.
If you can't find that salesgirl or she's too busy, sucks to you. Which was exactly what I experienced.
I get the point about them wanting to claim commissions, but these were el cheapo clothes costing no more than 20 SGD each.
dang imagine u need to carry sacks of money just to go on a shopping trip -__-

It's stupid but it's the only way people like these can get employment.
hmmm, thought the blame lies squarely with management or the person who designed the "system"?
*peeks in*
Oh yeah, the number of zeros on the rupiah banknotes is a nightmare. The locals use colour and size of the notes to differentiate.
Greenhorn tourists like myself literally have to count the zeros on the streets to make sure 45000 was not 450000!
don't even mention the nightmare of the traffic!
Go there insert card into ATM...
Instantly become Billioniare ![]()
Yeah all the zeroes was mindboggling.
I was there with the FS's family. We all had the shock of our lives when the lunch bill for six people came to 400,000 rupiah. ![]()
Then we all laughed when I crunched the numbers and figured that that was just 50 SGD.

They would have to redonominate their currency if not it's going to become Banana Money when we were Syonanto...
Probably not gonna happen.
Not the state of their politics at the moment and what-not.
And all the Sulawesi lawlessness is very worrying.
Redenomination is set to happen next year by chopping off three zeroes.
Even so, I expect a lot of chaos in the transition with people being too used to paying 30000 rupiah instead of 30 rupiah for a meal at McDonalds.
That's good news.
