Yeah stay away from Win 8.
Frankly, it says a lot that Microsoft is offering downgrade rights to those with Windows 8.

win 8 is actually pretty good with a touchscreen...
now i'm thinking whether to just forget the desktop thing and get one of these instead
before i go off...
i love oglaf!
Actually I thought Win 8 looks good....but since I only played with it a little at a hardware shop, can't really tell much.
At the moment, I still like my Win 7 for my lappie.
Anyway, for directions to wherever I may, I usually use gothere.sg
Some people say that site sucks, but I find that it works a lot of times, and it offers some degree of alternative routes.
I feel that even Windows 95 looks better than Windows 8. Seriously speaking. Win 8 looks really flat and unattractive.
And removing the Windows Start button from the desktop was a serious error.
Even if they had felt that the Start button was useless (which it isn't), they could have just allowed users the option of whether they wanted it or not.
I like the "search" option in the start menu.
It saves a heck lot of time compared to the older windows, where you have to scroll through lots of crap before getting to where you want.

I haven't tried Windows 8 but I have Windows Phone 8, and it's pretty damn good. It loads quickly and smoothly, and I like the clear minimalist design language. One page for all the apps and contacts you want to access quickly (and you can customise the size and colour of the tiles), and just one other for the full list, instead of pages of similarly-sized icons of different colours.
okay.. looking at a desktop with a i3-3120 3.0GHz processor on a Asus H61 mobo with 4GB 1333MHz RAM, 1TB 7200 SATA 3 HDD with a 24x DVDRW and Win7 for $498
with an option to upgrade to an i5-3470 for $97
question is: is the i5 worth $97 since it's just dad using it
Let's see..... both the i3 and i5 processors you mentioned are of the newer Ivy Bridge kind....
I previously used i3 Sandy Bridge (the previous generation), and it was good enough to play Red Alert 3. If your dad is only into simple word processing and internet use, i3 Ivy Bridge (the one you're looking at) is enough.
Ask whether you could upgrade the RAM to 8 GB instead.
It should cost less, and the improvement should be almost as good as the upgrade to i5.
You might also want to enquire about the possibility of switching the HDD to an SSD. If your dad doesn't store a lot of movies or something, 128 GB should be enough. And the performance boost (bootup times, etc) will be massive.

i see how when i go there next week... the HDD is 500GB with a free upgrade to a 1TB
Does your dad still click on every link and attachment he gets? I hope not.
speaking of windows 8, I'm now using it on my vaio s..
still rmb when I 1st started using, I was totally lost!

unfortunately he still does that but to a lesser extent...
i still have to yell at him once in a while about it but now he's only opening the crap his cronies send to him... unfortunately, it's about the same as opening and clicking everything
Good morning, just another start to the day.

You might also want to ask about the graphics card.
Discrete graphics (eg NVidia, AMD Radeon etc) are always better than the built in Intel graphics chip.
Of course if your dad doesn't use graphics-intensive software, then it may not matter that much. Just that for two similarly-priced systems, ceteris paribus, then the one with discrete graphics will be more worth it.

Take a longer nap. Mine is at least 20 minutes, usually 30.
I was suppose to nap for 30 mins, but I spend 20 mins on newspaper... It's wednesday today, got Digital Life

Newspaper can be read at other times. Your power nap isn't so flexible.
