There is always a certain amount of risk involve when you go wireless...cos a snooper ( a user who capture data without you knowing ) is almost invisible to you. like what johntolly had suggested to encrypt/cloak your channels...
but then again it is jus some inconvenance... it is just like the lock in your door, it can prevent a passerby from entering your home but a skilled locksmith can still open the lock.
Accessing at Mac should be ok since it is for a short while (less then 5 hours)
but do avoid online transaction where personnal info/password maybe transacted, if it is a must, ensure transaction carried out in 128 bits encryption . However i am still paranoid bout accessing sensitive info on other network where i can't see what is linked up, what if a data server is set between router and land line, any infomation can still be mined from that server. Check that your computer is disabled for sharing resources also...
ways to improve security...
1. Password protect your wireless connection(refer to your wireless router on how to access its setting table ) and network connection( avoid sharing resource on your windows settings).
2. Set/Limit allowed IP address/number of users on your wireless router.
3. switch off wireless connection whenever not in use.
4. Encrypt whenever you can especially your wireless channel.
5. Use a complicated password and a long one on your wireless connection. Example -> EdIih2S816c4H
include large and small caps with numbers that is random. Try to change password every 6 month for that kind of password...a simple password will need to change more often...
6. Dun leave your wireless router on for more 1 day.
Enjoy the freedom...
