I remember when I was in primary school, I saw a woman with her husband and daughter playing in the park. I was on my way to the bus-stop after school. I remembered very clearly I saw A NAIL AT THE BACK OF THE WOMAN"S NECK. She wasn't very pretty but she was slim with wavy hair. In her thirtys. Chinese.

very imaginative but i can tell u that the source of this urban leggend(dont know it the creature really exists or not)stems from the the idea of the inferiority complex woman and to deter any physical abuse of women
Once saw the program Urban Legends:Fact or Fiction on Discovery channel where they discussed about it -
erm... what if the girl who flash her Breast is a A- cup? then the pontianak come make friends with her ah.

How it begins
The most common belief is that the Pontianak is usually the ghost of a woman who died during childbirth.
Another belief is that she was abused by a male individual.
But it's not like when a woman did died at childbirth or being abuse will make her return from the grave.
Further on,supposedly she will only return as a Pontianak
if she has the need to see her child or seeking vengeance upon those who has abused her.
Appearance
Hair which mostly able to cover it's shoulder.
Black fingernails which are almost two inches long.
It wears a white gown which normally covers it's feet.
Shape Shifting
A large white duck which was never once seen in the area.
Normally seen flying near a dark areas which has large trees or flying by a large canal.
Changes Appearance
A Pontianak change it's face into three different appearance
01. The face of whom she was when she was alive.
02. The face of an old woman.
03. The face of a corpse.
Ward off
01. Obviously for Malay ghost, it fear the holy book called The Quran.
02. She fears the a fire which will catch a flame on her white gown and burn together with her.
03. Making a woman strips naked herself in front of her, she will run away screaming.
Pontianak is a 'she' and she do not have what a normal girl has.
She'll run away not because she's afraid but because she is ashamed. -
I read that in the true ghost stories of singapore when I was quite young. Ya, if for pregnant women ever encounter a pontianak, the creature would either try to dig out the foetus with her unusually long fingernails or if lucky enough to avert this kind of tragedy from happening, the baby will either turn out to look like the pontianak (whatever face the creature might possess) ?

eh.sharp pointed objects like screws and knives are able to scare them away too.cos they're scared of these sharp things.furthermore,if a pontianak ever catches you,it would dig your groin out (serious).so protect yourselves with sharp objects and kill them all!!!!

not sure if all these shyt is true, but these urban legends or myths have psychological roots
watch the show on Discovery channel Urban legends where they discuss the rationale behindsuch things and how they came about.... quite interesting
well the pontiana k came about due to the subdued nature of women n society in the past.Women were considered the weaker creatures and often abused by men.So this legend has its roots somewhere there.Probably some fedup midwife cried pontianak and spread rumours to scare male abusers.
