When you study the history of baking and confection, in the olden days, the doughnuts were all flat whole pieces until one fine day, a baker's apprentice got so horny that he used a piece of doughnut on himself. His boss then realised it was a nicer design and so was born the ring-shaped doughnuts we know today. This originated during the middle ages in Europe....
