I think if you can try to find out the one who is in charge of this "star retailer" and request to get your refund.
IMO, there is no point trying to service the modem as most of the time, it i will go break again soon. A refund will be what i will demand if a product is defective.
Lastly, although everyone goes to SLS for "cheap" prices, i have learned (the hard way) that unless you are an Hardware Geek, else, only compare prices of shops with Great Reputation.
Saving a couple of dollars and then having to do down to SLS repeatedly will wipe out any savings you save vs getting them at shops with Great Rep.

Is that the one with red color signboard, I have terrible experience with them. I will not patronise that shop and warn all my friends going there. I've realised that quite alot of shops (especially those smaller stalls) are doing business this way lately... They usually sell you things which you'll need to bring home to test out... And they'll guarantee that if the thing's spoilt, they'll CHANGE it for you... No refund though... Then you'll slowly get to realise their TRICKS... They'll make you go back to the shop and EXCHANGE everytime... When you ask, they'll say no refund...
