Okay, I'll put aside doing away of National Service in this post. I have no complains about the training but is it really neccessary to do drills and learn all the commands? Is it really neccessary to cut off your hair? You could tell me its all about discipline but what is discipline? In a war, there is no discipline, discipline will cost you your life.

I knew of one soldier who served NS for 9 years, of which he spent 7 years in DB. So you can choose to break his record of serving 10 years of NS. You will be famous! -

Well, go watch some war movies... are'nt you interested in shooting a gun, blowing stuff up!? I was a infantry bred soldier, so I fired several fighting weapons such as our M16A1, Saw, M203, Law- anti tank weapon which is phrased out already, 84mm gunner which is pretty powerful... I loved demolition live firing, setting up charges and playing with C4 sure there's danger involved but as long as you concentrate on doing a good job, it should'nt go wrong. Haha... The impact of the explosion just creates a shock wave in the air that you can actually see it coming to you! Also, you realise that grenades do not blow up in a big ball of fire but just a small bang and dust. Its more than just being disciplined, its about being in a regiment. Having a regime. Following standard protocols. Order and command and all that stuff. About discipline getting you killed in war. I don't think you can base this on what you watch in war movies. Discipline is instilled in oneself, not passed on. -

its about having and following proper hydration regimes for your own protection. tt applies also to proper body maintenance regimes.
its about staying awake during ur guard duties so tt ur peers may rest soundly.
these are jus a few aspects of discipline in an operational environment, wich could well save urs and ur peers' lives.
u may not agree tt these seemingly simple stuffr hallmarks of discipline, but as a PC who has tried to instll all these and more in my recruits, i have to say these are in fact quite important for one's survival.
there r many ways of instiling discipline and drills is one of them.
abt short hair - its for many purposes: outward appearance (another manifestation of discipline), cleanliness, and prevention of heat injuries.
and these r not stuff tt OUR saf came up with at their wimp and fancy to tekan our male citizens, but simple concepts tt are followed by military organisations all around the world.

personally i dont enjoy NS too but when there r tough moments there r always enjoyable moments wat especially when u suffer together with your army buddies.
come to think back there r alot of funny happenings when i was in NS of course days of not able to see girls is quite boring...

I guess there is really no point in the arguement. People are just brought up differently with different mindset which might be genetic or influenced by experiences and the environment. Fear of the regimental lifestyle may just be one the reasons one had for condemning NS even before one went through it. In any case, all able bodied Singaporean guys must go through it. Try posting your questions to SM Lee, I think he will be able to better clarify your doubts than all of us cause ultimately we have never seen turmoils in our lifetime. Whatever reasons we give you for the necessity of NS will sound bull shitting to you for maybe you just want to hear the answers you want.
Regarding NS for woman, I am actually quite for it but in a way that they be trained in the skill of first aid. I personally do not know the reasons why the government reject the proposal for woman to be conscripted into NS. Why dun you post your view in ST? I am not being chauvunistic here but I believe that not all women are suitable for combat; other roles in the service side; they are fine.
In any case, good luck for your NS which is 2 years later unless of course you can find a way out of the system. But an advice is to cherish the time inside since lan lan, you just have to go through it. -
say what you might, but one of the reasons why we're still around or still doing our own stuff without anyone messing around with us is due to nothing other than national service. sure, it might suck, but its necessary, as we're "a small island nation with no natural resources"(model answer to any question about our vulnerability), and every man has to play their part..if the time comes when we have to fight to protect what is ours, i'd have no qualms about doing so..after serving NS that is..don't know how old you are but i'm 15 this year..
about women serving NS, well..i'd just say that i'd rather serve NS than experience labour pains..
