JOO CHIAT HAVOC:
Man almost run down after scolding customers for insulting hostesses
THE three men were rowdy and seemingly drunk. They were harassing a lounge hostess and trying to strip off her undies.
Another patron in the Joo Chiat nightclub couldn't take it any more. He went up and told off the men.
And when the young man left the club, he was almost run over by a car driven by one of the men.
Indeed, if not for his alertness and agility, he might well be dead or seriously injured, according to a passerby who saw the incident.
The passerby, who declined to be named, told Lianhe Wanbao that he saw the car steering towards the man.
'The situation appeared life-threatening, but luckily the agile man shunted aside and did not get run over.'
The man landed on the bonnet after he was hit.
'The driver then stepped on the accelerator and rammed into the car in front a few times.'
Soon after, the police arrived and arrested the driver.
The police confirmed this morning that there had been a traffic accident and the driver had been arrested for committing a rash act.
This incident followed last Saturday night's when the drunk driver of the 'Geylang rampage case' killed two of his friends after accidentally hitting them. (See report below.)
The man has been sent to Changi General Hospital after he complained of pain in his leg. He also had multiple abrasions.
Before the accident, witnesses said the three men had harassed a hostess in the lounge and refused to pay her a tip.
PUNCHED WOMAN
They even punched a woman who had ticked them off for their behaviour. Witnesses said she had told the men: 'How can you play and not pay?'
It all started at about 11pm on Tuesday night.
Three men, in their 40s, entered the lounge and summoned hostesses to their table.
A 50-year-old customer, who only wanted to be known as Mr Wang, said that he was with his friends in the lounge when the men's behaviour attracted their attention.
Mr Wang said: 'Two of them took hold of a lounge hostess while the other man tried to take off her panties. Their actions were too much!'
He said that the hostess resisted and struggled to free herself.
It was only after the other hostesses stepped in to help that she was able to get away.
Mr Wang said: 'That hostess looked unhappy. The hostesses later told us that the men's offensive actions had humiliated them.'
After the incident, a few of the hostesses decided not to remain at that table.
Soon, the men lost interest and settled their bill.
But they argued with the hostesses after refusing to pay their tips.
The other customers sided with the hostesses and scolded the men for being unreasonable.
Mr Wang said: 'A middle-aged woman had just arrived to look for her husband who worked at the lounge. She reprimanded the three men and was suddenly punched by one of them!'
When other lounge workers came over to reason with the men, they left angrily.
Third incident in six days
# A 46-year-old furniture shop owner, known only as Ah Lek, killed two of his friends, Mr Lee Chong Chye, 57, and Ms Xie Yan, 32, when he reversed his car into them at Geylang Lorong 19 on Saturday night.
He also slammed into 9 vehicles.
The police suspect that he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time.
# At 1am on Tuesday, police received a call about a fight in a coffeeshop at Geylang Lorong 16.
Several attackers had allegedly flung chilli powder at a man in his late 30s before attacking him physically.
The victim said that a few men had earlier smashed the rear window of his car, which was parked in front of the coffeeshop.
