Taxi operator ComfortDelGro is stepping up checks to ensure that its taxi drivers don't pick and choose their customers.
This is to ensure that drivers don't disappear just before the start of the peak period.
ComfortDelGro says its plain-clothes officers will focus their attention during the critical periods from 7am to 9.30am and 5pm to 8pm from Mondays to Saturdays.
In the last six months, enforcement teams have been conducting checks at popular locations like Suntec City.
About ten percent of the nearly 1,700 taxi drivers checked were caught and warned not to hold out for peak periods again.
And ComfortDelGro says it will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against errant drivers who could also get their contracts terminated. -

I question myself , my answer is : 8pm they take taxi , save $2 , that's why ?

they should have know , the taxi pricing they set will caused this problem , this happened long time ago liao , now they still can't curb the problem .
If they set the prices like :
4.30pm - 4.59pm = $1.00 peak hour surcharge applys .
5.00pm - 7.30pm = $2.00 peak hour surcharge applys
7.31pm - 7.59pm =$1.00 peak hour surcharge applys .
Staggered format .
That should minimised the problem .
I suggested , they just ignored .
The staggered midnight charge is an example , now u don't see cabby taking cover , yes some did for $0.35 differences , many don't . It minimised the disappearing effect .

if u're providing a service, u are obliged not to disappear selectively and stop providing the service.
customers who are the ones giving u their custom do not have an obligation to provide u with a steady stream of business.
U cannot compare cabbies disappearing to customers disappearing. Different obligations. Butchering economics doesn't make it logical.
I understand u have to make money for a living also, but im just pointing out how its a non-comparable situation. -

To be fair to some good drivers who don't hide , most would do it for an extra $2.00 .
I found that the person who decide the prices set no brain . If they can see the positive effect of the staggered midnight charge , why don't they use the effect on other time , and now what ? Problems arise again ? All because they did not attempt to set a price where there is no reason for a cabby to wait for peak hour surhcharge to start .

Not true bro, even before the fare hike, taxi drivers r known to hide before peak hours. The recent price hike to help the cabbies, most of them complain that they daily income are affected due to high fuel cost, after running for 8 hours or so, only can earn $40-$50.
In-fact, there r tons of taxi drivers project a bad image to the company
1 Smoking while driving
2 Rejecting customer
3 Hiding & waiting for calls
4 Chit-chatting on handphone or walkie when driving
5 Drive recklessly
6 Rude
7 Bad customer service
What Disciplinary action can the company implement???80% r low educated & simply don't believe in customer service & company image....This will take time & when the new generation is taking over the old cabbies thats where the image will improve.
Those caught on TV r damn stupid, if you want to hide, hide with class...parking by the roadside waiting for call...

"THREE ComfortDelGro cabbies were caught on Monday evening trying to avoid passengers, in a surprise check by the company's officers.
Two were parked along a road when they should have been on the move and a third did not turn into a taxi stand. They were all apparently holding out for phone bookings that would earn them an extra $4.
ComfortDelGro, the largest taxi operator here, carried out checks on more than 2,600 of its cabs between 4pm and 8pm on Monday. The vast majority did stop to pick up passengers, the company said, and the three offending drivers have since been advised not to avoid passengers.
The checks were a response to calls from passengers for service to improve now that taxi companies have raised flagdown fares and the peak period surcharge.
Smart, the last of seven cab companies to announce fare changes, is raising its fares in line with the rest on Aug 1.
ComfortDelGro's manager for fleet admin service, Mr Lee Choo Kin, said Monday's checks were called after complaints from the public that cabbies were waiting until the start of the peak period at 5pm before plying the roads.
It previously carried out checks at Suntec City as well as places like Shenton Way and the Singapore Turf Club. In the last six months, it has caught about 170 errant cabbies.
When The Straits Times tagged along for Monday's checks, 12 plainclothes ComfortDelGro officers were stationed near three taxi stands around Suntec City, taking down licence numbers of empty cabs that passed by without stopping at the taxi stands.
Mr Lee said these licence numbers would be checked against a computer system to find out if the cabbies subsequently received a call booking in the same area.
Errant cabbies are sent a note saying they should turn into the taxi stand to pick up passengers. Repeat offenders are disciplined.
The majority of ComfortDelGro's cabs have automated tamper-proof rooftop signs. The system allows them to turn on the 'On Call' sign only if they have received a call booking and prevents them taking a call booking when they turn on the 'Busy' sign.
Passengers like financial analyst Serene Tan, 37, and sales assistant Chloris Lim, 35, complain that it is hard to get a cab at Suntec City after 8.30pm.
Said Ms Lim: 'The cabbies like to hide. A lot of office people call for a cab.'
Passengers said one popular drivers' hideout is the area near Benjamin Sheares Bridge. ComfortDelGro has conducted checks there, Mr Lee said, and pointed out that cabbies could be taking a breather there and not waiting for call bookings.
The Straits Times conducted its own check on the taxi stand near Carrefour, between Towers Three and Four from 8.35pm to 9pm on Monday.
More than 20 cabs from all seven taxi companies passed by the taxi stand without stopping, even though about 10 people were waiting in line at any one time. It took 13 minutes to get a cab.
ComfortDelGro said it does checks at all times of the day and night and is stepping up enforcement. SMRT said it conducts random enforcement checks at least twice a week."

With new roof-top signs, can just stand near taxi stand and photograph taxis that fail to turn in...submit the photos and complain to LTA...catch all errant drivers. -
Unlucky driver , or i call them , idiot drivers .
This drivers never learn , it's not a secret that the satellite system don't despatch a job within 1km , they despatch a job above 2km away .
Like Bayshore , the job can only despatch to cabbies around Bedok South Ave 1 , no way that idiot driver that parked at Bayshore Road can get a job at Bayshore .

Like in Suntec Marina centre , the jobs is despatch to me if i am @ ECP after Fort Road , near Rochor , once i enter Suntec area , the satellite automatically blocked all my signals , so that i could not get a job .
Suntec call can also be despatch via Beach road near Golden Mile .
Those comfort drivers must know this , just don't understand why are they waiting inside Suntec City for call .... bizarre !
They basically looking for trouble , new bird i guessed ! Spoilt market .

So they just want to sit around and wait for calls??? Sure... let's call for cabs but just for the fun of it... basically, call the cab to pick up at specific venue and let them take up call and you simply watch from a distance their frustrations when their passenger don't turn up!
surely, some innocent cab drivers will be involved but guess that's too bad since majority of their colleagues are keen to play cat and mouse with passengers! Once they had enough, they will cry tolong and guai guai go pick up flag-down passengers!
