I got ripped off by a taxi at Singapore

I was visiting Singapore for 6 days this week and I had a very good experince. However on my retrun from Meritus Mandrin hotel to airport, I took the taxi. ( It was around 4.45AM).
At the end of the trip Taxi driver wanted $48 for the fare (He said this is including the Night charge).
I paid only $16 from Changi Airport to Hotel during the day. It is hard for me to beleive that the night charge is $ 32. I felt I am being ripped off. However I was in hurry to catch the plane and hence I paid the money and took the receipt and the taxi number.
Taxi reciept says SINAGPORE TAXI. Taxi driver asked for my room number of the hotel and put that in the receipt against taxi number. However I managed to get the taxi - Licence plate number SHB 7448R.
Can some one tell me where I can complain about this taxi driver? People like him give a very bad name to the iamge of Singapore!

This incident happened on Oct 17th 2006 4.45AM (Maritus Mandrin Hotel to Changi Airport- United Airlines terminal.

Did you make an advanced booking for a lomousine cab?
Coz the site says the charge is $16 for an advance booking of that type of cab and there is a 50% surcharge on the cab fare for trips made between 1 - 6 am.
So $16 + $16(booking fee) = $32
$32 * 1.5 = $48
Correct? -

did u make a call to book or u flagged it at the hotel?

No- I did not make any advance booking. I di dnot even know what that is.. I checked out the hotel and went outside and the taxi was waiting there and I just called him. AT the maximum it should be say $24. I di dnot even any extra lugguage- Just a carry on suitcase and my lap top bag.
The money is no big deal- However this left me a bad taste in otherwise wonderful experince. If some one can give address where I can send the compliant to, I would like to send it them for whatever investigation they might want to do.
I am planning to come again with my family for a week in the next months weeks and I hope this incident does not cloud my opinion about Singapore!

yea...i saw a tourist got ripped off at changi airport a few wks back also...someone quoted her $40 from changi to pasir ris.......

I am sure LTA will look in to this so that this driver will not rip off another tourist.
I had geat fun in Singapore. People, food, shopping etc. Only sad part ws the taxi rip off! (Well- What can I say- There are bad apples in every tree!). -

Going by the taxi registration plate - SHB7448R - it is highly unlikely that the taxi belongs to Comfort, but more possibly SMART (Green) or TransCAB (Red). Defintely not blue. Only green and red cabs have SHB7xxx on their registration plates.

hmmm... u try to calculate yourself. Look at the rates. Usually after midnight, the charge is super expensive. Dont be shock when you realised its twice the amount on the meter. Calculate again.

I got a note from LTA that they are investigating. Comfort Cab wrote it is not their taxi. They checked their fleet. Since it was night, I most probably thought it was blue- It might as well been green.
It cost me only $16 from Changi to Orchard Road- That too with several stop and Go traffic. There was no traffic at 4.45 AM and hence the driver did not stop at all. Even if it is double, it should have been only $32.
If the driver had justed demanded additional money as a tip, ( Saying he is poor etc). I would have just given him, since I had some Sing Dollars and I was going to drop it in a charity box in the airport.
Since he decided to cheat me, I had no other option other than to report to the authorities. Hopefully this will be a lesson to other drivers and LTA will do the needful. -

The receipt was a machine-printed or hand-written? If it was hand-written, mostly the driver wanted to cheat you. Machine-printed receipt has its boarding time, alighting time, distance, and the extra charges printed clearly. I believe most of the taxi have this.
Any chance the taxi was called by hotel in advance? Did you inform hotel to get a taxi for you? When you boarded the taxi, did you notice the meter was S$2.40 or S$2.50?
Many taxi drivers cheat tourist by saying extra mid-night charge...its only additional 50% of the fare...
